"SNIP............
Donald Trumps tax reform ideas could leave roughly 93.2 million Americans, or just under half of the U.S. electorate, off the hook for at least part of their income taxes, CNBC reports.
Trump has proposed eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security benefits, and has also said he would think about exemptions for firefighters, police and military personnel.
These exemptions are part of Trumps larger vision to transition away from the income tax system and replace it with the revenue he expects to generate from his hardline tariff proposals.
Wall Street Journal: We could tax like its 1899.

(6,000 posts)need to counter in someway. It would not be that expensive considering the lower 50th Percentile pay only about 2.5% of Federal income taxes. https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/federal/summary-latest-federal-income-tax-data-2023-update/
I know a number of servers and factory/warehouse/factory/etc workers who like that "pledge." Most probably already lean trump because I'm in a rube red area. And about 40 to 50% of retirees do pay tax on a portion of their benefits.

(873 posts)...most of the taxes collected in this country were excise taxes. Excise taxes are taxes imposed on a specific good or activity and are commonly levied on cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, soda, gasoline, insurance premiums, amusement activities, and betting. Federal dependence on excise taxes is down significantly since 1950, when almost 20 percent of federal tax collections were from excise taxes. Today, excise taxes only make up about 3 percent of federal collections. Excise taxes are regressive, meaning those with the lower incomes pay the same rate as the richest people in this country and this is part of the reason they fell out of favor.
Tariffs are essentially the same as excise taxes except they're place on imported goods. Tariffs aren't paid by the country of origin; they're paid by the consumer. Like excise taxes, tariffs are not only regressive, but they're often answered with retaliatory levies from other countries and make American exports more expensive and, therefore, unattractive. Trump's tariffs on agricultural exports did so much harm to American farmers, he wound up increasing government aid to them to quell the political upset. Tariffs have their place, but as a wholesale economic strategy, they're bad. It was tariffs that exacerbated the Great Depression, plunging the American (and world) economy into an abyss from which it took years (and government deficit spending on a world war) to rebound from.
Most people today have no idea of what tariffs are, or how they work so, thus, may not understand why they won't only not make our economy better, but will lead to Americans paying more for their imported goods which include cars, electric appliances, and clothes.

(13,161 posts)and I'm glad they are taxed. I live in Texas and you can't go 2 inches down the highway without seeing an oversized truck trying to run you down. Not to mention the exhaust that is the main contributor to global warming. And while they're at it, tax those damn LED lights that blind the hell out of us at night. Yes, was just having this conversation the other day with one of my Lyft passengers.

(619 posts)Oh but that probably wont be an issue since hell likely make overtime illegal. 😂

(2,426 posts)wet dream of slave labor. He will pass this and make all overtime non tax. The corporation (with a wink and a nod toward trump) will immediately make all positions salary (no overtime for salaried employees). Once everyone is salary they will get 60 hour weeks from workers. essentially cutting worker's pay by a third. $20/hour x 40 = $800, $800 ÷ 60 hours = $13.33/hour. This is all planned folks.

(12,950 posts)Trump can't implement this on his own anyway. Nip this BS in the bud by promising voters that a President Harris will veto any reckless attempts by Congress to eliminate taxes on Social Security, Tips, and Overtime.
