Americans are divided over support for a policy that would round up and deport immigrants who are in the country illegally, even if it takes setting up encampments guarded by the U.S. military (47% favor, 50% oppose). Nearly eight in ten Republicans (79%) favor putting undocumented immigrants in encampments, compared with 47% of independents and 22% of Democrats.
The vast majority of Americans who most trust far-right news (91%) or Fox News (82%) favor militarized encampments for undocumented immigrants, compared with 44% of Americans who do not watch TV news and 36% who most trust mainstream TV news.
White evangelical Protestants (75%) are most likely to favor militarized encampments for undocumented immigrants, followed by the majority of white Catholics (61%), white mainline/non-evangelical Protestants (58%), and Latter-day Saints (56%). Among non-white Christians, around 47% of Hispanic Protestants, 42% of Black Protestants, and 33% of Hispanic Catholics favor this policy. Four in ten Jewish Americans (39%) and around three in ten unaffiliated Americans (32%) and other non-Christian religions (30%) also support militarized encampments. More than half of Americans who attend church weekly or more (57%) or at least a few times a year (51%) favor putting illegal immigrants in encampments, compared with 41% who seldom or never attend religious services.
Around seven in ten Christian nationalism Adherents and Sympathizers (71%) favor militarized encampments, compared with fewer than four in ten Rejecters and Skeptics (37%).

(22,945 posts)Our government in 2020 and is planning another coup this time again when he loses. Unfortunately I feel there are a some government employees that are still imbedded from his administration waiting to finish the job. A great example the person inside the intelligence community who released the US intelligence on Iran s war plans.

as well as all the other low waged jobs regular Americans are unwilling to do?
They can say they support putting immigrants, regardless of status, in detention camps and then be deported. But are they willing to pay the higher prices for everything else they consume? Accept the fact that ther will be staff shortages in the economy that will drive up prices?
I do not think they have thought out that stuff in advance.

(65,685 posts)you have provided, Americans wouldn't do those jobs. Maybe that's their reasoning to close the Department of Education, to have child labor again, and women to have more babies to fuel their sick ideas.
I hate to think if this unspeakable thing happens. The felon will crash the economy for sure. And those tech bros will try to institute crypto currency by ditching the dollar. Also remember Project 2025, that will be in place. Women, LGBT, will have more restrictions on them and others. The risks to our way of living and our rights will diminish.
Do we really want to live in a fascist country???? The world is watching, are we going to put this imbecile in office or have a JD Vance to take his place??? Do we want our children to have less rights than us???? Do we want to see our foreign allies shun us?? NATO be disassembled? Climate change initiatives ended????
I will stop there. We ALL have one thing to do: VOTE
Preaching to choir perhaps, but you get the picture.

(741 posts)Other than migrant workers who have picked crops for I don't know how long (since I was a kid in ancient times), when did it happen that Americans would not do those jobs? I don't know if you're right that they won't (you might be) but it's an appalling situation if you are. Other than picking crops and working in those places that murder animals, I've known many Americans who have done all of those jobs.

If you notice the "Christian nationalism" measure they use, I think you'll agree they aren't Republicans, or helping Trump.

(8,932 posts)DeSantis tried that in Florida and everyone went nuts. He had put signs up saying there was going to be construction at 13 parks, ended up taking them down and denied that he was serious about it. I think there was a fair number of Republicans who were upset. That is one thing that pisses a lot of them off - doing something that will kill off animals.

(13,351 posts)Climate migrants tend to be minimally educated, culturally traditional families with few skills "Richer" nations want.
Large numbers of minimally unemployable men coming into a country where they don't speak the language and aren't familiar with the cultural norms - especially if the country doesn't really need that much additional labor - tends to cause an increase in tensions and small conflicts.
It's fear of being invaded, of having to compete for the basic things; the uncertainty and resentment from having to upend one's life and go to someplace alien to your habits and traditions - and having to depend on charity there just to get by when you used to be able to take care of yourself and live with self-respect and dignity.
Climate Migrants don't want to leave "home" but they have no choice. They have to leave with whatever they could carry.
Countries don't mind migrants, but don't want masses of desperate people who have little to bring with them, people who need to be taken care of because they have no place to go back to if things don't work out.
Sadly, until we as people in general can get our heads wrapped around the concept of we're all in this together, there's going to be a devolution to selfish tribal thinking whenever a situation becomes difficult.

Once you make a concentration camp, who you put in it gets a lot hazier.

(23,949 posts)I'm still suspicious. As the old saying goes--If you're not paranoid, you're not paying attention. I have a hard time believing that half the country's population consists of vicious and unempathetic people.
Without undocumented workers in agriculture in Calif, the state's economy, (fifth largest in the world,) would collapse. That means the rest of the country will also be doing without much fresh fruit and vegetables. We would also be unable to fill menial jobs in housekeeping, construction, factories, etc. That sounds to me like the whole country's economy would collapse. Not too many bona fide "Americans," want to work for minimum wage with no benefits.

The vicious and unempathetic are overwhelmingly Republicans, and that's extremely easy to believe.
PRRI is pretty well-known for polls about attitudes, especially to do with religion.
