With just seven days to go my husband will be retired. We have been paying on a student loan for him for eight years. He lost his factory job at age 55. He is now 67. He will be retiring in seven days this couldn't have come at a better time! He called me and said check the email I sent you! Seriously I had to pinch myself. I was the one that prompted him to apply for student loan forgiveness. He had been paying on it faithfully for the last eight years but when you lose your job at age 55 and get knocked down the pay scale over $10 less than what you were used to making, you pay on your student loan very slowly. He had already paid 7,000 of it. bd paid nothing during Covid.
With the remaining balance a little over $2000 this is one last debt we need going into our retirement. This made my day and I just wanted to share this with everyone in DU.
That loan forgiveness is not crazy! Anyone should not have to take a student loan out after age 50 considering their factory job was bought out by a Japanese company. They wanted people to return to work for $13.80 an hour after you've worked there 31 years. I believe in my Democratic roots I always have and thanks to all the people who posted about student loan forgiveness. it prompted me to make my husband try it! I love Joseph Biden !
I just had to share this with such jubilation.
Retirement with one less bill helps! 43 yrs of working 3 shifts my husband deserves it!
Many would have resorted to disability!

(1,864 posts)Myself, Mr. Barnes and many others were in same boat job-wise but we chickened out about getting new loan/degree in our 50's. Made it to retirement somehow, worked for the only remaining companies in town that had jobs during the pResident Bush recession(s).

(12,001 posts)He started out working at UPS and worked there for over a year, never called a day off and couldnt afford to. My husband had the busiest route and could work circles around most of those guys that work there. After a year, he started bugging them about a full-time position and they wouldn't give it to him. By this time both of his knees were shot from jumping up and down off of a truck all day, long in one of the busiest sections to give an older man because nobody wanted it, and he was at the bottom of the pole, luckily he got his job at Odot a union job and finished out his last nine years there. He worked there with bad knees a few years and had bilateral knee replacement and back to work in three months. Hoping for the best now.
