(5,832 posts)Anyone persuadable by this was already swayed by one of the hundreds of prior stupid and horrible things he's said.
Those still open to voting for him are doing so for reasons outside of Trump (overall party platforms) or loves the stupid shit he says.

(12,046 posts)wtf were they doing with that racist comedian? I mean my first reaction was he was borat trolling the magas, but evidently he is who they knew he was. So like, why double down on appealing overtly to the racists at this point if you're the trump campaign... didn't they think they already had them sewn up... maybe more useful not to bash latinos? I don't get it.

(10,883 posts)For those who do hear about it, the ones who currently support Trump will write it off as a bad warm up comedian and not a symptom of the deeply racist MAGA world. Might make a few think twice when it comes time to actually vote for the guy, but I think a tiny, but meaningful percent of people who say they are going to vote Trump won't be able to actually do it when it counts for a variety of reasons.
Those who support Harris will take it as affirmation of their choice to say FU to MAGA world.
Those who don't plan to vote will take it as "see how messed up it all is? I'm well out of it."

(6,103 posts)they're already about 85% for Harris. Half the employees where I work are Puerto Rican, we're just a few blocks north of the historic Puerto Rican neighborhood in Chicago, and it would be difficult to find a Trump voter around here.
They do tend to turn out at higher levels than white voters do, they have a higher percentage of eligible registered voters and their turnout is usually better than 80%.

(8,820 posts)it might be the push they need to vote for Kamala. Some may not even be aware of the comment.
Sympthsical
(10,402 posts)In a close race this late in the game, all that's needed are nudges in one direction or the other. And every nudge can make a difference. Biden only won 2020 by 44,000 votes across three states. Trump won in 2016 by 80,000 votes.
When it's late October and campaigns are trying to scrape it out, nudges count.

(6,103 posts)Trump won by 44,000 votes across Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in 2016. Biden won in 2020 by adding Arizona and Georgia to the blue wall, technically, the closest of the five was Arizona with 11,000 and Georgia with 11,000 but the state that put him over, Wisconsin, he won by 20,000, and he won Michigan by 140,000 and Pennsylvania by 85,000.

(30,431 posts)Yes, it was pretty repulsive and will be in the news cycle at a prime moment in the election. People are currently voting.

(790 posts)I only think a few people at this point who were actually going to get out and vote anyway were going to have their candidate preference change. Not zero, but only a few.
But this will also energize more Harris supporters and de-energize (on balance) Trump supporters. (I say "on balance" because a few Trumpy sickos might be more energized by that hate.)

(29,328 posts)People who may have been weakly-aligned trump supporters may be less inclined to vote, and people who may have been weakly-aligned Harris supporters might be more motivated to vote. Pennsylvania appears to be pretty close and pretty important, and there are half a million Puerto Ricans who live in Pennsylvania.

PA was already in the Harris column. So I really think there won't being any impact.
Now, of it is offensive enough to Puerto Rico and votes change in a large percentage, AND FL is tight, then we may have some impact.

(13,456 posts)and people are going to be talking about it. I have a good friend here in Texas (she moved here from NY after 911) who is Puertorican and she still keeps in contact with friends and relatives in New York and Puerto Rico. She despises Trump and has said that she knows many who feel the same way.
This is going to backfire on Trump big time.

(969 posts)Nearly 2% of the US population are Puerto Rican, but it's not like they will be the only people offended by trump's comment. Every percent matters when the polls are this close.
Not really an October Surprise, but a misstep on tsf's part and one we can take advantage of.
If you know any Latino/Latina people voting tsf, share the video and ask them if they want to support someone who supports that.

(790 posts)It may change a few, maybe enough in PA and WI to help make the difference. Bad Bunny, J-Lo and Ricky Martin have all endorsed Harris and shared her plan for Puerto Rico to their Instagram followers. I think the Harris campaign had some knowledge of what was coming at that rally to schedule the messaging for Puerto Ricans at that time, the campaign is on the offensive the final days where it needs to be.

(568 posts)It could change everything.
I heard a podcast where The Harris campaign think Georgia is going to be about a 1000 vote margin.

(34,519 posts)They're not reachable. That's why trump knows he and his allies can literally say and do anything with no consequences with his base.
Hopefully the racism in plain sight will convince some couch sitters to get their asses up and vote for Harris.

That would mean 4 more Democtatic Party Senators and 2 to 4 House members. The time has come to make these entities STATES!

(9,782 posts)Guam and American Samoa with Hawaii. As for the "push", these so-called territories deserve the right to self-determination, as opposed to a legislative decree from Congress and President. One consideration is taxation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the non-voting U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico pay no federal income tax. That would dovetail with " no taxation without representation". If Puerto Rico was to become a fully-fledged state, would an obligation to pay taxes to the IRS go along with it? This type of consideration is why Puerto Ricans (and citizens of other territories) need to weigh in for themselves, before Congress decides to take up the issue.

(9,596 posts)Too many Texas Latino voters have the habit of not voting at all, no matter how much racist abuse is heaved on their heads by the Far Right and Texas Republicans.
I admit Im an Anglo, and a guy. I fought my last fist-fight when I was 23. But if you diss me and mine, I might not swing at you, but If youre a politico running for office, youre not going to get a free pass. I WILL vote against you in the voting booth.
