(3,103 posts)The war made us too busy to discuss the disappearance of nine billion dollars. Never to be mentioned again by the talking heads. It was shortly after that we learned the enemy was north, south, east and west of Baghdad! We have been fed so much garbage it is amazing we are still able to take the abuse they pass out today. But .here we are!

(56,896 posts)Only one made it to 80, some didnt even make it to 70.
Of the ancestry I knew, only three made it to 90. One was, like her daughter (my paternal grandmother), a smart, liberal intellectual. One, my maternal grandfathers mom, was a mean old lady who didnt much like anyone. She lived to 99, shaming my grandfather into looking out for her until he was 77. Then, there was her son, my maternal grandfather. He survived the horrors of the trenches of World War One, and the poverty of the Great Depression, scraping to feed his young family in Manhattan. He was saved by his wit (wanted LJB to start a War on Puberty to stop the Copulation Explosion), and his generous nature. He lived to be 102. He was special beyond words.

Dad's mother died at 78 of dementia. His father died of cancer at 78.
Mom's father died at 65 of an embolism. Her mother died at 93, and was healthy until her early 80s when her health began to decline precipitously.
Very few people are physically and mentally fit to be president at such an advanced age. Bernie Sanders is still very articulate, but he's probably the rare exception, and I'll bet even Bernie tires more easily than in the past and may not be up to the jet-setting international travel demands of a U.S. president.
We really do need age limits for the presidency.
DFW
(56,896 posts)He thought the ideal age for an incoming president ought to be about 50. This was in 2009, the year Obama took office. Howard had just turned 60 in November of 2008.
Now it takes an extraordinary 50 year old to have the knowledge, the experience, the maturity, and a thick enough skin to take that job on. But JFK, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama did it while still in their forties. They were all extraordinary individuals. So, for that matter, were Carter and Biden, though they exceeded Howards age limit. For that matter, Howard noted that some had urged him to run again in 2016, but at age 68, he said no.

(49,755 posts)I don't think attacking Trump's age will change one single vote, but it could change who we are. There are a lot of things that I will do to win, but I won't become them.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of valid reasons to attack Trump, ones that actually could make a huge difference.

(5,019 posts)I can handle it. I don't think Tim would be saying it otherwise. Also, I can't get mad at Tim. Love does that to me. But seriously--DT has been a jerk since birth, from what I understand, and is not aging gracefully. Or doing anything else gracefully. (stating the obvious much!)

(6,294 posts)If they attack Biden, turn it right back on them.

(49,755 posts)They only know how to attack and counterattack. It doesn't matter what their opponents say. They just want to fight. It is a waste of energy to engage them and it drives them nuts if you won't.
This isn't some philosophic view, but comes from life experience. I've been around such people and they will argue even if you agree with them. They don't want resolution, they want combat. What does drive them nuts though is to just give them an incredulous look, shake your head, and walk away.

(49,755 posts)As someone nearly 80, I take offense. Plus I remember all the ageism cracks about Joe. I've really had enough of it.
Go after his immorality, his incompetence and his mental acuity (or lack of), but leave out the ageism attacks. Meanwhile, getting in a garbage truck has nothing to do with being president, though it was a really stupid photo op.
I expect better from Democratic leaders. Though considering all the vile, nasty things Trump has said on the campaign trail, I'll give Walz a pass on this one.
pfitz59
(10,991 posts)However, Trump is vying for the most demanding and powerful position on the planet. Strength and vigor, both mental and physical are demanded of the job. Trump's age and obvious physical and mental decline must be fair game in this race. We all get old (if we're lucky) but how many of us are vying to run a nation?
So it's not a good argument if he's replaced on age.

(9,782 posts)I'll be 76 in a couple of months and know my limitations. And if it looks like I might be exceeding them, I take no offense if and when someone calls that to my attention. There's plenty of recent video foootage to suggest that Trump has some serious health issues, both cognitive and physical, and possibly age-related in terms of ability to perform tasks. Couple that with the stupid stunts he attends to pull off on any given day, and Walz's comment is spot-on.

(2,346 posts)Trump at nearly 80 is trying to project an image of himself as strong, vital, handsome and basically immortal. This is of course a lie. There are eighty year old men who can still kick the butts of people half their age, but the reality is that by the time you hit 80 you're losing fat and muscle tissue, tire more easily, and mental processes simply take longer and are more likely to get short-circuited. My father and wife's mother and father are all in their 80s, and while all are relatively fit, the operant term is "relatively".
Being president is a hard job. It places hard demands on the body, from stress to lack of sleep to grueling travel schedules, and it generally is best done by people in their late 40s (so that they have the maturity necessary to do the job) to mid-60s. Biden was able to handle the administrative side of things brilliantly, but being president also requires being visible (especially to more conservative folk), and I think early on he made a decision to focus on cleaning up and realigning things to being a public figurehead. I was sorry to see him go but I also felt it was the right decision.
This isn't agism, it's simply reality.
PatSeg
(49,755 posts)He could have attacked Trump's inability to do the job and his declining mental health without mentioning his actual age. There are some attacks that are better left to the media or surrogates. As the future Vice President of the United States (I'm being optimistic), I think he needs to maintain a certain dignity.
Walz is great on the campaign trail and this is the first time I've heard him say something that rather rubbed me the wrong way, but so soon after all the ageism attacks on Joe, I'm still sensitive. Joe was and is the best president of my lifetime and he has gotten so little credit for his accomplishments.
Meanwhile, the most reliable voting demographic is the elderly. Not all of them will take it the wrong way, but I'm sure many will.

(50,787 posts)But I do find it interesting that we (DU) are OK with making fun of his age when a few months ago we were bending over backwards to pretend that our candidate's age was just fine and how dare anyone say otherwise.
Ironically the end of Walz's statement -- comparing trump's claim that China will pay for the tariffs to the way Mexico paid for the wall -- was much more impactful than the age quip. Yet here we are.
It didn't bother me a bit for a minute and then I thought wow, why is this not bothering me? I dislike it when DT's weight is used as evidence of his poor character, but I sure haven't been the one to step up to that plate, nor to the one about him wearing diapers. People, it can happen to anyone and it might just happen to you. But when it happens to him? I'm the one who stands by and watches the bully get beaten up on the playground. Not happy about it, but not intervening.
PatSeg
(49,755 posts)and as you say, "much more impactful".
I don't care about Trump, but I do care about how our Democratic leaders are viewed. When it starts to get too petty and childish, many people get turned off with anything concerning politics.

(2,346 posts)I have an incredible amount of respect for Biden, but what made me change my mind about his running came about a week after the debate after I saw a video of his meeting with the new Labour Prime Minister of the UK. The minister is in his early 50s, and looked fit and healthy. Biden ... did not. He looked like he was seated, looked wan and exhausted, and even his response was spoken in a wavery voice. Was he cognitively challenged? No - I do a lot of work with Cognitive development and it was clear that he was fully cognizant. However, it was also clear that the demands of the office were becoming harder and harder for him to meet.
At 61, I've "aged out" of a field that is dominated by people in their 20s and 30s. There's a reason for that - at 60, your brain simply does not learn things as fast, and the foundational work that you grew up (and in some cases helped develop) is no longer as comprehensive as you need to keep up with the changes in the field. Consequently, I'm somewhat involuntarily semi-retired, and spend most of my time lately writing books, where I can work at my pace. I've seen people that were in their late 70s and 80s that were still programming, but I also have noticed that most of them are increasingly unable to deal with the changes around them, and can often hold back a development team because the development team is having to appease them while still getting work done.
So when he announced that he was not going to continue to pursue a second term in favor of Kamala Harris, I was elated. It's also worth noting since then that Biden has become far more quiet, and increasingly is letting Harris dictate both foreign and domestic policy (as I've noted elsewhere in this thread). We've not had a successful transition from one democratic administration to another since 1856, when James Buchanen succeeded Franklin Pierce. By all indications, should Harris win, this is likely to be the smoothest transition in history because Democrats understand succession planning, even if they don't get a chance to practice it.
So, no, I'd argue that this is not agism but simply an assessment of capabilities. I think that Biden had to be talked out of retirement, and he's in a superb position to become a Senior Statesman, a very exclusive club that only a few dozen people can legitimately claim.
