actually come and look over her shoulder at her ballot which he's not supposed to do. He then had the nerve to say to her, you know I just canceled out your vote with mine. She replied, "well it's a good thing I voted today then because it means I canceled yours too." Magats aren't very logical. My sister isn't afraid like me to give it right back.
The guy harrumped and went to stand in line to put his ballot in the machine. A poll worker came over and asked my sister if he had looked at her ballot and my sister said yes and told her what the guy said. She also told the lady not to confront him on it, because she said she didn't want to make the poll workers time more stressful and then told her what she had said back, and the lady laughed.
Hey my sister actually would talk back to the nuns if she felt she was getting treated unfairly. She wasn't letting him get the last laugh!

(13,850 posts)… to clarify that, yes, we cancelled-out each other’s votes, as that’s how vote tabulation works, but only one of us voted for a rapist.

(3,970 posts)I am an old guy who keeps to himself when in public. There was a minister, older that I, who visited the same restaurants as I did. He might see me working a crossword puzzle at a table and come up from behind me and say, jokingly in his soft voice, "I can finish any answers which you can't get."
That older minister never irritated me. About six years ago, I heard him gently talking to a fellow he was having lunch with. The minister said that he recognized that Trump had personal failings, but he approved of Trump's court appointments.
Yes, the stranger coming up from behind the woman and offering a comment was inappropriate, in the 1940s and even more so in the 2020s. His spying on her ballot and mentioning his opposing vote border on voter intimidation. My only point is that I do not know how far along the spectrum of rudeness that fellow falls.
BlueKota
(4,214 posts)It's isn't right, but he might have thought he was being funny, and was rude, but not as downright nasty as some can be.

(4,894 posts)I was at an ATM one time and a guy in his 50s basically leaned over my shoulder and commented on how much money I was withdrawing. There was nobody else around and I hadn't heard him creeping up on me so I startled pretty badly and pushed him away.
He got pissed saying it was just a joke and not be so sensitive and then stalked off but come the fuck on? How hard is it to understand that women deal with constant harassment and the threat of violence and it's not acceptable for any reason to creep up into their personal space and impose on their time and attention no matter how clever and funny you think you're being. That's doubly true when they're doing something where they would have an expectation of privacy like withdrawing cash, voting or coming out of a public toilet.
Just no, my dudes. Apply common sense and courtesy.

(35 posts)He should have been reported, had his ballot invalidated, then been removed from the polling area. A full report should have been submitted by the poll worker to the registrar of voters. This was clearly a polling violation and all details documented. Please have your sister contact the Harris campaign immediately! Maybe he was a plant to influence voting or just disrupt the polls! Maybe a first time voter heard this and never votes again. Thus didn’t happen in a vacuum.

(57,807 posts)I was nearing the end, so only the hardest clues were left. And elderly woman seated across from me had been following my progress from across the aisle. I noticed it, but she wasn’t being intrusive, so I let her watch.
When I appeared to be stumped, though, she couldn’t hold back any longer, and said she was good with crossword puzzles, and I should let her help me out. This was all in German, and she was German, a local from her accent. My crossword was from the New York Times, so I doubted she would understand anything, but instead of saying so, I said, in German, sure, see if you can make some progress, and handed her the paper. She started to study it, quickly realizing that she didn’t understand anything.
“But this isn’t German!” she protested. I said, “of course it’s not German. I never said it was in German. It’s from America, so it’s in English. You said you could help me out. Can you or can’t you?” She handed the paper back to me, mumbling something about not knowing enough English. Maybe she asked a few more questions before offering to finish the next stranger’s crossword puzzle.

Many years ago as a new nurse I had a doctor put his hand on my knee under the desk while we were charting. There were others present. I calmly said "Take your hand off my knee or your wife and everyone in this building will hear about it". He never touched me again.

(6,331 posts)…we have been voting in the Republican primary as the winner of the primary is the one eventually elected. Our hope is to vote for the most sane candidate, they never win.
Due to my letters to the editor supporting progressive causes, I was well enough known that an Election Judge approached me at a recent election and asked me if I was voting in the correct place.
I assured him I was voting where I wanted .
BlueKota
(4,214 posts)We don't have open primaries, and in the specific town I live in it's generally only 1
candidate who usually runs unopposed, and often there isn't even a primary.
That's good your primaries are open and you can at least try to help get a semi rational candidate elected. I don't even bother to vote in local elections anymore. Just state and national ones.

She and I were a lot different in how we handled parochial school I cowered from a number of my teachers, and tried to dissappear inside my own head. She stood her ground. Oddly enough they went after me, more than they did her. I guess it was because they knew I was more vulnerable and an easier target.

(4,214 posts)and asked if everything was alright. The jerk ignored her question and went and got in line to process his ballot. My sister told her what happened but she didn't want to add any more stress to the poll workers day, so told her not to feel like she had to go after him on her account.
Hope22
(3,915 posts)That is what we are there for. There are rules of behavior inside the polling station. Those rules are there to keep the process and everyone including the workers participating in it safe. In my opinion she should follow up with the BOE. The problem is that this man feels free to intimidate voters. Notice he chose a woman. He might not be quite as nice to the next one. It could be a worker that gets hurt. Just saying.
SunSeeker
(55,526 posts)She told the poll worker that she already had to deal with a lot. She was afraid the poll worker would get hurt.
Hope22
(3,915 posts)My guess is with these emboldened men it makes women in this country more likely to have these experiences over and over again! I hope she decides to call the County Board Of Election Office and talk with someone. At a minimum they can improve worker training. The hope would be that they are tracking these threats to the voting process and participants. I know that my local Board is. She deserves better!

(35 posts)I reached out to my CIC with 30 years experience. She said to contact law enforcement because a crime was committed. Also the Election Commissioner clearly violated ethics laws. Contact both campaigns and the press. What the guy did was horrendous but the election worker allowing this made it a federal crime.

Whenever offered by such a person I would say, "Get away from my vehicle before I'll run you over!"
Asshole at polling place would have heard a loud, "Don;t touch me, asshole!" and had his ass escorted out.
