(53,323 posts)He doesn't get that he'll sell fewer at the higher price. That'll take another month or so to explain to him.

(17,577 posts)In addition to what he paid for the shirt. He wont be able to get a refund for it.
And if there is a competitor who isnt subject to the tarrif, he is just screwed.

(2,106 posts)way back in the 1950s that the word "tariff" was just another word for "tax".
I guess they don't teach that in school any more.

(17,577 posts)Basically a tarrif on anything brought in from overseas. It was pretty costly, enough to make you think twice about buying something expensive from overseas.
I dont remember too much about it, except everyone thought it was a good idea when it went away.

(16,360 posts)If there are other t-shirt sellers who buy t-shirts that are made in America, he will be at a disadvantage because he will now have to pay more for his imported tshirts and have to compete with t-shirt sellers who can now out compete him on price.
This guy can then choose to eat the added cost this reducing his profit, pass the cost along to his consumers and lose business or find an American T-shirt manufacturer to buy from. In the latter case, the American company might now have so much business, it could raise prices to all its clients.
Of course, this is what tariffs are designed to do, raise prices so American made products are price competitive with imported goods.

(3,748 posts)When I return customs asks me if I have anything to declare. If needed I pay the tariffs. Its pretty simple to understand. I wonder how many of those people have been out of country and paid tariffs? Yet for some reason cant equate the two.

(2,221 posts)Until they don't. When the consumer can no longer afford to "foot the bill" they don't buy anymore. And then the business goes out of business.
It's my belief that one of the main differences between the corporate oligarchs and the reich-wing oligarchs is that the corporate oligarchs know that they can only squeeze so many golden eggs at a time out of the consumer goose and want to keep the squeezing that allows their lifestyle going. The reich-wing oligarchs are either ignorant or just don't care. They want all of the damn eggs now and they want to roast the goose as well.

(51,431 posts)Explain it this way: "China doesn't pay any tariff at its border for exports. Once they leave port they are done. The US company importing pays the tariff at the US dock to the US government. That raises your cost. You have to raise your price. What does raising your price do to your sales volume?"
And then "Or you can pay the extra cost but leave your price the same. What does that do to your profit?"
And finally "So either your customer pays extra and sales go down so your profit goes down or you pay the extra and your profit goes down that much. So either you and your customers both pay or you pay it all."
