Thanks to Biden Harris I had $85,000 in debt forgiven through PSLF.

(17,722 posts)Ignore the usual suspects who show up on these threads to say how wrong you and Biden are for getting this relief.
You DESERVE to be done with these loans.

(262 posts)This is what I have to say to that.
1.) I went to an academically high achieving HS. My GPA was about. 3.5 and my ACT scores were respectable. However, it seems bc I wasn’t one of the kids going to a prestigious school my counselors did saw student loans as a better faster option to push rather than scholarships. Once I was in graduate school I applied for and was able to get almost 💯 of my masters degree paid for. Also, at the time, in order to stay on my parents insurance I had to be in school despite having no clue what I wanted to do with my life.
2.) My parents were broke at the time and their marriage was not good. My dad had tried to start his own business and failed. I don’t blame him, but the fact that there was no fund for me and my parents were on the verge of divorce meant I was left at 17 to make very big financial decisions.
3.) my first year teaching in 2013 I made less than 30,000 a year. That’s with a masters degree. By my 3rd year I was up to 35,000 a year. If one considers myself hat most people with a masters degree were earning at the time I was under paid those first three years by at least 30G a year.
I am in my 12th year teaching and have been in a low SES school every year. Not complaining, because I have loved every school I have worked in. I love my job and sometimes I’m surprised I get paid for it.
4.) I’m extremely grateful. I’m not going to sit here and act like I deserved this forgiveness more than anyone else. Even people that work in the private sector are crippled by this debt and they deserve opportunities like the one I was given. These loans were predatory IMO and I think we need to forgive as much debt as we can. I feel freer and everyone deserves to feel that.

(3,513 posts)What a weight lifted from you! But remember, before the Raygun revolution, you never would need to incur that debt in the first place in order to educate yourself.

(139 posts)It must feel like a ton of weight was removed from your shoulders. An education should not put people in debt forever. Congratulations.

Mine were discharged when I was awarded disability insurance. I had no idea that would happen back then but it was such a weight off my mind.

Do you mind if I ask you what you did to make it all work out?
And Congratulations, BTW!!!

(262 posts)I got all of my paperwork completed by mid February and it’s been a waiting game ever since. The loans got passed back to Dept of Ed at one point I think and then sent back to Mohela.
One thing that saved me:
At the time (idk if it’s still an option) but they encouraged me to consolidate my loans as I applied for PSLF. Some of my loans didn’t qualify for forgiveness, BUT if I consolidated before April 30th they would then all become eligible for forgiveness. That deadline had been December at one point and they extended it and I think it had been extended a time or two before that. So it may still be an option? I really didn’t even know this was a possibility.
My mom was always asking about my loans and what I was going to do about them… she passed away suddenly December 1st last year and I decided I needed to get my shit together and call to figure something out. The guy I spoke to was so nice and told me about everything and talked me through what the whole process would be like.
My mom loved Joe Biden and she’d be very happy he helped me out of this mess.

(9,347 posts)Who did you speak to, or what number did you call, to find out about all of it, if you don't mind me asking...or if you even still have the information. My son in law has a partial consolidation, as far as I can tell.
Thanks again!

(893 posts)Do you have any idea how much the original loan was, and how much has been paid on it?????? I've heard horror stories about paying for years and years, and still owing a huge chuck of the pricinple.
Thanks in advance.
I might be able to look it up?
