I think part of the problem is that we don't understand voter motivations as much as we think we do. My thoughts on that here:

I also think there might have been too much focus on Trump and not enough on issues, but that might have been filtered by the sources I frequent, including DU. Harris's largest SuperPAC did contact the campaign and suggest that the focus was too much on Trump. That met a lot of resistance here, but there might be some truth to it. I thought the campaign did a good job with balance, but I also wasn't admittedly paying close attention to all of the speeches, etc.

(6,528 posts)Polls for most the final month showed it was an absolute dead heat, some with Trump holding a slight lead.

(28,834 posts)All of the talk of landslides and fake polls on DU gave many a false sense of security. It was always close in the swing states, and that's where the election was going to be decided.
