(10,599 posts)I tend to be a glass half empty person to begin with, big shock. But I really feel like things will never be good again in this country during the remainder of my lifetime. (7,132 posts)I'm 66 and not sure how many years I have left also. Feeling healthy but bam one day who knows. Hey ya gotta carry on, for the kids if nothing else. I lost 4 family members this year. Another cousin 2 years younger then I is fighting for his life in the hospital as we speak. Like a younger brother to me. Gotta Breath, do activities that bring you pleasure, start something to get your mind off things.
And Live. Our time is limited, the older you get the more it hits. I hear ya. Stay in Present Time and do what you wanna do right now. We can't control everything for the people we leave behind. We did what we could do. They have to take the Barton and run with it at some point. Enjoy your life with the time you have. I'm just a cranky old fighter from my youth ha but know when to relax. All the best.

Good idea sometimes to just trust the music. Musicians have a different agenda.
All I watch is sometimes the afternoon-night crew on MSNBC.
The mainstream media did a lot of damage since Biden was elected:
- made the Afghanistan withdrawal into a disaster instead of informing about the circumstances there caused by Trump. This made Biden drop in favorability polls and he never recovered
- didnt talk enough about the real causes of inflation: the pandemic and price gouging. We did better than the rest of the world but they didnt say that. Also didnt talk much about improving inflation numbers
- did little to dispel the myth about a bad economy. Job numbers and unemployment rate were good
- were like jackels harping on Biden being in mental decline. Did not do the same with Trump. Normalized. Trumps asinine behavior and his felony convictions
- were too both siderish comparing Trump and Harris. Saw that a lot with the NYT and WaPo.
Ultimately they cared most about their profits.

(10,823 posts)The difference between the NY Times, WashPost, LA Times and others like them is that they really report and vet their stories. (I worked in a major metropolitan newsroom for over 35 years, FYI.) The list you mentioned, while OK to listen to and watch for partisan information, are opinion, just like Fox.
I've said it a couple of times on here today. The legitimate media is not the reason we lost the election. It's easy to scapegoat them, but they work very hard on their stuff and they vet it. BUT ... and here's a big BUT ... their opinion pieces (aka op-ed) are not the same as news stories. People need to look closely at what they're reading to make sure it's a news story and not an opinion. (By the way, blogs are opinion.)
If you really want to abandon the MSM, you're the one who will suffer. You will be less informed. If you abandon the MSM, you only give Fox more room. And that's the last thing we need. Fox (and their RW media cronies) are a huge reason why we lost. Fight Fox, not the NY Times/WashPost.
Abolishinist
(2,088 posts)And although a good point re: opinion pieces, I don't believe they have much effect overall. Many who post on this site spend a lot, and IMO sometimes an inordinate amount, of time on all matters political. A comparison could be made to sports. 40+ years ago I could name every player on the Denver Broncos, attended a lot of their home games, and could name all of the starting quarterbacks/wide receivers and others on the other teams. Today? None. I couldn't care less, no interest at all in the sport.
What we fail to realize is that there are millions out there with the same attitude regarding politics, they really don't care. Their pastor told them to vote for X, their neighbor said Y, and with everything going on with all of the social media sites it comes down to not much thought regarding who gets their vote or why. Too many immigrants crossing the border? The price of gas, food and rent too high? I was better off four years ago than right now? Israel/Palestine? Well then, I'm voting for X.
I'm really not sure how much of a news junkie I'm going to be going forward. I'm not going back to football, but I'm considering a new outlet for my spare time.
Blue Owl
(54,974 posts)They normalized the Nazi garbage clown, now here we are....
The double standard was so obvious. If Biden or Harris said a tenth of the controversial things that Trump did it would have derailed their runs.
Sadly, the networks and social media make their money by number of views. Trump knew this. Every time he said something outageaous it only assured him more coverage and a billion dollars worth of free advertising.

(10,393 posts)there are some reporters who rankle listeners--I won't name names, but I have been listening to NPR/PBS since the 1970s and, while it hasn't always been good, it has almost always given unbiased information and reliable sources.
I've heard frequent discussions of authoritarianism and how it rises, the many things Trump says without evidence (which they sometimes even call a lie). Great guests and in-depth discussions on many topics.
NPR listeners hear a multifaceted approach to issues rather than simplistic and one-sided. Plus so many of their stories are fascinating and often I just have to listen to the whole thing, even if I have to drive an extra two miles and back to have enough time.
My husband and I have had many great conversations about something we've learned by listening.
No media is perfect, of course. But
1) a few hawkish voices that used to be on during the W. era (Cokie Roberts, etc.) have either died or retired, and
2) those who diss NPR on a regular basis may just have fallen prey to a disinformation campaign against one of the premier sources of news we have in this country
one the GOP has tried repeatedly to get rid of public funding for. In fact if Project 2025 proponents get their way, they may yet succeed.
Ironically, seems like Drudge Report was only outlet that took Trump to task.

(34,879 posts)Yes, a lot of their income comes from contracts
but advertising too. Think advertisers will continue if we tank and I mean really tank their networks?
Bezos and others that own the media
newspapers too, dont care if they make money, but they wont accept a constant drain on their billions if they dont get the results they want. The whole point of buying up media is not to make money. the sole purpose is the dumbing down of America- weak and compliant. Right now their getting the results they want. Please please
stop listening!
We the consumer still have a lot of power if we would just exercise it.

(7,396 posts)Fox would get their talking points from Rush. Gop pols followed.
GOP bought up alll of the high signal AM radio stations. Nillions of people in rural areas still listen to AM Radio, which earned its alternate name, "hate radio".
Once Fox News was created, messaging became a major issue for the left. There are no democratic mirrors the Tucker Carlsons and the plethora of other right-wing personalities.
It's not just limitied to Fox. CNN hired a right-wing political editor two years ago because their viewership was slagging. I suspect the networks are also competing for right-wing viewership
We need our own network and we need to put money into left leaning You Tube creators. You tube is surpassing the networks and cable for viewrship!. Do we have a Joe Rogan? The pattern continues.
