(2,381 posts)I'm banking on everyone else being wrong about this. I suppose it's just my way of dealing with the crushing loss.
I try very hard to remain positive when faced with stuff like this. It's really hard sometimes, but it's about the only tool I have to get through disappointing times. No offense intended, but I hope you are all as wrong as wrong can be when this is all over with.
I just have to set my new horizon on Nov 2028 and wait for it with anticipation. That's about all I can do really. I really do believe we will all get through this without serious issue.

(2,381 posts)when I say that there are a lot of days when I have to fake my way through it, and I'm certainly not always true to my own demands on myself. This week has had a couple of days like that. i just try to keep it to myself when it happens.
We can do this. We always manage.

(22,128 posts)Laughter means hope is still alive.
Cirsium
(1,158 posts)Is it hope, or is it denial? Beyond that, of what use is hope? It is passive, it is magical thinking. Let's be honest about the situation, and lets get results and ever mind hope. Where the house on fire, you don't need hope to react. In fact, hope would probably get in the way. You can hope that a catastrophe doesn't happen, but when it does it is too late for hope.

I deny that I am defeated.
I deny them the satisfaction of seeing me give up.
Get used to it.
Cirsium
(1,158 posts)No, I will never get used to hope as a substitute for results, and I have seen 50 years of hope but diminishing results. Democrats hope. Republicans go for the throat. Don't hope, fight.
I refuse to deny that we are in a virtually hopeless situation, with no clear path out of the nightmare, and that we fight on because it is the only thing to do, whether or not we have hope.
Courage, determination, resolve are needed. There is no longer any time or eergy to waste on that old weak fall back, hope.

(1,158 posts)Defeat is not a state of mind, it is a material reality.
12 years of formal martial arts training would be no match for the Gestapo or SS. It is no match for MAGA.

(15,584 posts)Given my lousy record with polls since my attempt to reinvent myself as a bullish cheerleader in the last few weeks (after I felt that a Vance-Trump presidency would be unendurable hell and goddamn it if I believed hard enough and felt it in my gut that Harris could win), I am abstaining from polls..
I guess we shouldnt try things we know we are not very good at. I will revert to gloomy watchfulness..That was my main mode back when my username was nam78_two.
I got badly burnt out in 2011 and since then I wasnt able to think clearly a lot.
At least this horrible, horrible election seems to have jolted me back to reality. I feel like I used to prior to 2010 (which was around when I started feeling more and more out of depth and burning out. Far from unusual in PhDs. I have been fortunate in having good mentors and colleagues throughout but eh..science research is hard. Hey another reason for Trump to dismantle education entirely!).
I mean I dont think we are not in trouble. Pretty fucked I would think but as I said, since I am clearly shit at predictions of this sort anyway I am gonna quit
I shall go drown myself work now. I shall be back off and on to commiserate with everyone ;-/ .
Now that the very worst has happened at least there is no more uncertainty. They say humans deal worse with uncertainty than disaster.

(6,119 posts)I was preparing myself for this, but I still hoped dems could win and that would have been the end of this for good. Still the reality is setting in, and it is affecting my health. I may not make it through much longer when it starts up again. No amount of preparation could prepare me for feeling of a ton of bricks weighing down on me.
We are getting prepared to leave if things get bad fast. First step renewed passports which we should have done already, but I had several years of severe trauma from which there is no real or complete recovery, and many legal and other issues to deal with and still do.
I watched in 2015 when it started and a fascist rose to power. No one challenged him the way they should have and now they are doing it all over again. It is truly insanity. The emperors clothes etc. No one has the courage to.
I can only hope for a miracle to save us all, to save me from being tortured continuously by the psycho who killed my father. I should have listened to him and left here years ago, hed be alive and we would be safe. Also wish we never came here of course.
I knew at some point there would be no real justice for my father or for many others, and many others were involved in his death, but to have the main culprit gone would have been enough for me to accept
It would have been something. A relief and weight lifted.
There have been more traumas these past few months which will also never be healed. I have seen a terrible change since this all started in the fabric of the society. Not that these issues werent there before but its much worse. I have seen the face of evil again in another sociopath. Its frightening.

(17,378 posts)preparing for this distinct possibility. I'm materially prepared so far as he doesn't wreck the economy, which I am beginning to suspect he can and will do--perhaps in fairly short order.
Despite the mental preparation, I woke up at 12:30 this morning shaking in a cold sweat. Despite imagining the worst-case scenario, this could be even worse than that, especially if we emulate "the Argentina economic model." And there are a hundred other things to worry about too, like the Retribution Tour. Ukraine. The emboldened, marauding gangs of incels, militias, etc...
Good luck to us all.
Meowmee
(6,119 posts)Im worried about the economy too, hopefully it wont be as bad as we think it could be. I woke up on election day feeling very nauseous and anxious. I brushed it off and thought to myself things are going to go well. Then I ate something and I felt better. I had to go out and vote and do things. But my brother had been telling me for two or three days that he thought it was going to go bad, that she would lose. He voted early. But I had started to feel I had some optimism. But then it all happened and my worst fears were realized. It was sort of like 2016 all over again a bit and I just couldnt believe that this nightmare was going to start all over again.

Already begun with likes of rfk and Haley. You think Cruz, Marco or any of them like trump or each other for that matter? Will be like a game of survivor among them, with alliances and betrayals. Hopefully they can't even agree on what temp to have their conference room at.

(593 posts)the way MAGA has been running the House: into the ground.
It's not just the systemic and organized cruelty that I'm worried about, it's also the chaos and mayhem; people who couldn't run a crappy fast food franchise with ten menu items are going to be in charge of an incredibly interdependent system full of nuances and subtleties. And they all hate each other, will be constantly feuding and pushing their own private agendas, and will be vying for favoritism from a guy who is practically dissolving before our very eyes.
Dis-integration.
