Trump is ignorant of many things, because if it doesn't affect him, he doesn't care. But if it is to his advantage, he gets "smart" really fast. Plus, he really had nothing to run on, so he blocked approval of the border bill and invented a way to reduce the debt - tariffs! That way he could justify keeping the large corporate tax cuts - tariffs would foot the bill! Other countries would pay! Americans would pay nothing! Hahahahaha!

But a businessman who needs to purchase parts to keep things running still has to make the initial outlay of cash and HOPE the products will still sell at the tariff inflated price. It's almost like a farmer who has to buy the seed, the equipment to plant and then harvest while hoping weather and market will make it work in the end. The initial investment has to be made and Trump will put a lot of small businesses out of business, which the fat cats love to see.

Fri Nov 8, 2024, 11:01 AM
Nov 8

When the inventory he is buying now runs out, the tariff will still be there, and the cost of his company's products will rise.
If sales drop due to higher prices, the choices will be to either let workers go, or for all the workers to take a pay cut to save jobs. The alternative will be that the company goes under.
This is how a depression starts. It will take a while for the economy to react to the inflationary pressures that a broad-based tariff will generate. Some businesses will thrive, but many others will not. Of course, the workers will be the first to see the effects of a tariff based trade policy.
Add to that the removal of all those immigrants from the labor pool, and we have a recipe for economic collapse.
It seems we have a large number of Americans who are either totally ignorant of how the economy works, or simply don't care about the implications of what Trump plans to do.
Just like the wall that Mexico was going to pay for, Trump is telling folks that the selling nation pays the tariff. It won't cost us a thing, and there will be a tremendous benefit to us all.

There's an old saying, "we get too soon old, and too late smart".
Unfortunately, the second half of this saying may be, at best, a deathbed realization.

Fri Nov 8, 2024, 05:01 PM

The business community is very worried about trump's tariffs and are already taking actions to protect themselves.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-victory-china-tariffs-taxes-inflation/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&linkId=645094473

As President-elect Donald Trump readies to return to the Oval Office, U.S. retailers that depend on foreign suppliers are prepared to pass along the cost of his proposed import tariffs to consumers, potentially leading to higher prices for a range of products.

Americans stand to lose between $46 billion and $78 billion in spending power each year on products including apparel, toys, furniture, household appliances, footwear and travel goods due to the new tariffs, the National Retail Federation stated in findings released Monday.

"Retailers rely heavily on imported products and manufacturing components so that they can offer their customers a variety of products at affordable prices," NRF Vice President of Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said in a statement. "A tariff is a tax paid by the U.S. importer, not a foreign country or the exporter. This tax ultimately comes out of consumers' pockets through higher prices."......

Businesses have also stocked up, placing bigger-than-usual import orders ahead of new tariffs taking hold, as the U.S. imported 11% more Chinese products in July and August than they did during the same two-month period a year ago, according to the Census Bureau.
