(44,862 posts)In 2026, when there is a statewide general election, there will be a special election to fill the remaining portion of Rubio's term -- which runs until 2028.
One scenario -- does DeSantis appoint himself so he can be the incumbent running in 2026?

(44,862 posts)He's term-limited so when 2026 rolls around, he has nowhere to go if he wants to keep his hand in while he considers another presidential run in 2028, with the Senate seat as a fallback. He ties his own hands in terms of running against someone he chooses as Rubio's replacement. It's not unheard of for a governor to arrange to be appointed to fill a senate vacancy, although it hasn't happened in recent years. A near example was when Ben Sasse resigned as senator and Pete Ricktts was named as his replacement. Ricketts' term had ended just before Sasse resigned and his hand-picked successor as governor is the one who named him.

(9,454 posts)At least Rubio isnt totally off his rocker. He can act sane if he has to. Acting intelligent is another thing. I guess well be rid if Rubio and maybe Scott in Florida. Theyll just replace them with some jerks, though.

(513 posts)In one of the debates he was in (I dont know if it was for the Senate or Presidency), he disclosed he had some that he hadnt paid off. Given his age at the time, I was surprised he hadnt taken care of that.
