Okay, good luck finding sympathy after helping install a fascist who will destroy our democracy. Do not expect us to respond to fundraising letters to help Gaza. Oh, when you protest about Gaza, watch Trump send the military over, declare protesters as Hamas, and send them to Gitmo. What should I do then? Sympathize? Why? I do sympathize with Gaza but, man, it is not going to happen after this.

In any case, when she shows up to run for president its always very strategically targeted to maximize damage to the Democrat. She is not, repeat not, interested in my California vote. She is interested in swing districts that weigh heavily in the Electoral College.
Hillary Clinton, who won the popular vote, lost at least one states Electoral College cache by the number of votes Jill Stein got. This time around Jill worked over the Muslim immigrant population of Dearborn MI, and they voted for her, or Uncommitted, or for Trump but not for Kamala.

I honestly can't imagine behaving in a more destructive manner than from the comfort of their own homes, those who profess to care about their plight wasting their vote the way they did. Trump will pose new challenges for immigrants. However, very few of his voters will be affected by his policies. His Latino voters don't want "Communist Venezuelans" to get a free pass, while Mexicans are not eligible for asylum. Mexicans need to either have alot of money, work visa, or cross illegally to get in the US. Yet Venezuelans are automatically admitted.

(5,959 posts)And that's why I can't understand how these people could be so naive. Or stupid.
I hate to put an ethnic group into a box and judge, but it seems Arab Americans, for the most part, don't understand democracy. It's foreign to them, so when they start to feel liberty like they've never felt it before, they become demanding, thinking their voices deserve to be heard, and responded to immediately. I've seen this in other Palestinian protests. They seem to have little understanding of, or patience for, negotiation.
They were told that voting for Stein or Trump would only lead to the continued destruction of Gaza, that it would get worse, and that in vengeful retribution, Trump will denaturalize as many people in Dearborn as he can, and send them back to where they came from.
AloeVera
(1,950 posts)"Thinking their voices need to be heard....immediately".
They've been asking to stop the genocide of their people for 13 months. I don't think that was too much to ask and I don't think they displayed arrogance or entitlement in just asking.
Every comment on this thread, even ones like yours that express sympathy for Gaza, let alone the ones brimming with anticipatory schadenfreud - reveal a shocking attitude of demeaning and looking down on that ethnic group.
It should be a simple matter of putting yourself in their shoes and asking yourself what you would have done if your people, your family were being slaughtered. Would YOU support the party funding the slaughter and allowing the starvation? Could you - is that even humanly possible?

(64,357 posts)We could withdraw all aid from Israel, which would result in a lot of bad things. None of our allies would ever trust us again, as we abandoned an ally. Without US support, one of two things would happen. One is the complete annihilation of Israel and the deaths of millions of Israelis, including Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Jews and others. Or, Israel might decide the time has come to use their nukes.
Either option is a catastrophe on unprecedented levels. Literally a nuclear WWIII.
So yes, what the protesters demanded is unreasonable. Biden and Harris were working day and night to force a reasonable solution. Trump will not do that.
AloeVera
(1,950 posts)That's a far step from withdrawing all funding, yet even that bare minimum was not even tried. Come on, be real.
And all Israel would have had to do was adhere to international and humanitarian law. But that would have been too much to ask, right? So it never was.
Nothing screams Palestinian lives are cheap than that sin of omission covering up for all Israel's sins of commission.
Besides, I don't think that holding an ally to account is abandoning them. It's standing up for your own avowed values and principles. How silly of Palestinians and their kith and kin to ask.
Downright arrogant and uppity.

(105 posts)that YOU think are important. So tell me how you feel about the Gazan leadership continually flouting those laws, both inside and outside their borders (honor killings, throwing gays off roofs, forcing women to cover their bodies). Israel should fight with one hand tied behind their back because heaven forbid we offend hamas, hezbollah and the rest of the terrorist organizations that have been fighting to destroy Israel since 1948. I know it's inconvenient to recognize hamas was ELECTED by their people but those are the facts. I'm sure the Gazans are thrilled that people who profess to care about them have tossed them aside to "teach us a lesson" and made it so those who quite literally hate them when they give them a thought at all have the power to tell bibi to do whatever he wants. Brilliant strategy,

(105 posts)I live in the REAL world where actions have consequences. Voting in a terrorist organization has consequences. Aiding them in housing hostages has consequences. 75 years of continually missing opportunities has consequences. Just how many do-overs do people deserve? When will they realize that the weaker party doesn't get to dictate terms. They need to realize until they get rid of hamas, sit down and negotiate with Israel - they get nothing. Until then, more will suffer, more will die - and it's ENTIRELY the fault of hamas. It appears the days of trying to get people to feel guilty for the plight of the Palestinians is over. It's hard to feel sorry for people that do nothing to help themselves.

(1,950 posts)Your question implies that the motive is vengeance as opposed to a desire to see the end of Gaza's suffering. Do you consider all protest votes vengeful or just those of this ethnic/religious group?
Was the vote irrational and self-defeating? Largely. Did it cost the election? I haven't seen proof that it has. But to us, their vote is so infuriating that we are allowing fantasies of worse retribution that verges on schadenfreud - to let off steam. Turning our backs on our own values in the process. I find that almost as intolerable as what I have witnessed in Gaza.
But we can't know what it's like to have your people's lives be considered cheap and worth less than that of others. It must be pure anguish to watch that being played out and know that your country could stop it and, from your perspective, refuses to do so.
Reason, logic and self-interest fall to the wayside in those circumstances. Talk of parking lots, WWIII, FAFO and scary Trump are not going to penetrate when you think the worst has already happened and you are treated like second-class citizens anyway. Your voice and need to be heard and responded to is ignored.
Their lived experience, not ours. So I try not to judge, nor will I have satisfaction when even worse befalls them. It's an awful tragedy and it should not have been allowed to happen. And yes, there are consequences to that too.

I do think Trump and Bibi have been in cahoots since their meeting in July and hence no ceasefire and the war-mongering. By then, though, Gaza was rubble and its children destroyed by malnutrition, disease and trauma.

They have burned even more bridges. I frankly, in my 64 years on this planet seen a more self destructive group than the Palestinians. And why? Because they listen to people who just tell them to suffer a little longer and surely the world will come to their aid and rid them of those pesky Jews. And what has THAT gotten them? Just look at the conditions in Gaza to see the answer to that. Many people have started wondering why help people who do nothing to help themselves.

Not gonna argue the history of the Nakba beyond this. Everyone has access to a good library.
The neighbours don't come to their aid now? Yes, a favoured way to throw shade in the never-ending quest to belittle, demonize and blame. (64,357 posts)The really frustrating thing is that the Muslim U.S. citizens who helped elect Trump won't suffer at all. They aren't trying to live in Gaza. They won't be deported; they're citizens. They will keep their businesses and benefit from Trump's tax cuts.
If they, personally, were going to suffer they wouldn't have let Trump be elected. It was all theater. Same with all the privileged white lefties who are celebrating because they stuck it to the Democrats. They will suffer far less than most people from Trump's actions.
Again, if these educated, privileged mostly-white people had really been at risk for suffering, they wouldn't have helped elect Trump.
This was a performative, virtue-signaling temper tantrum fueled by Russian propaganda.

Roosevelt did it with Japanese Americans and got away with it, even the courts supported his decision!
And the current courts are already in Trump's pocket...those Arab-Americans knew what they were doing, because they felt slighted, or this from the piece: "All she(Harris) had to do was stop the war in Lebanon and Gaza and she would receive everyone's votes here," Dearborn's Democratic mayor, Abdullah Hammoud, told the Associated Press."
I have to wonder how Harris, as Vice President, was going to stop the war?
In an interview with Politico, Michael Sareini, Dearborn city council president, added that many Arab American residents in Dearborn "feel like they've been redeemed."
"They wanted to send a message and they did. This stance on endless wars and killing of innocent women and children has got to end," he said.
Trump made clear that he was going to allow Netanyahu to continue until Israel was satisfied with the outcome.

(64,357 posts)It's part of white Americans' blind spot that we view certain immigrants as helpless people deserving of pity. It's condescending, and it's wrong.
Many Arab Muslim Americans have been U.S. citizens for generations. They own businesses. They're doctors, lawyers, engineers. They are affluent, privileged, just like wealthy white citizens. There's no particular reason to assume that they are Democrats. They are not going to be deported. Trump got their votes.
The same is true of many Hispanic citizens. Again, their families have been here for generations. If they're voters, then they are citizens. They aren't refugees. Trump promises to deport undocumented workers. Many Hispanic citizens have little to nothing in common with undocumented workers, and they're insulted at the suggestion that they do.
We need to recognize that privileged people do privileged things, and stop being surprised that privileged non-white or Hispanic Americans do the same things that privileged white Americans do. Notably, this includes voting Republican.

(48 posts)Stephen Miller plans to "denaturalize" and deport, which he calls "remigration," Muslim, Indian, Hispanic, and African naturalized citizens (even if they say they voted for Trump). He also plans to deport, no matter their ethnicity/country of origin, highly educated, wealthy Silicon Valley tech CEOs and other high level tech workers no matter what type of visa they used to enter the country for such employment, and yes, the tech companies will scream and holler in protest, likely to no avail. A Google search will bring up these plans.

What will happen is what always happens - the Republicans will punch down, abusing marginalized people who have little power. They will separate families and inflict pain.
They will not hurt affluent, privileged people, except to the extent that all of us suffer from living in an unfair, abusive society.
Democrats seeking revenge will not find it here.

It was Putin that was behind the Hamas attacks, both directly and by proxy through Iran.
Netanyahu wanted Biden out. He clearly had a tacit agreement with the rapist. That is why he prolonged the response, not only to cause as much destruction as he could, but to create the mother of all wedge issues for the Biden Administration during an election year.
Then the Putler online operation kicked into high gear to organize the campus protests which really turned the younger voter against Biden/Harris and conveyed an atmosphere of incompetency and failure when Biden/Harris needed the opposite.
It was brilliant. And it worked.

Hamas was enabled to power in the first place, and allowed to thrive by Netanyahu as a counter to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.
Netanyahu feared democracy from breaking out every bit as much as MBS did after the Arab Spring.
The oligarchs of the world covet Palestinian land so Netanyahu's long time family friend and *rump's shadow diplomat Jared Kushner worked out a deal that eliminated the Palestinians from any consideration putting a pressure cooker on the stove and walking away from it, and waiting for it to explode.
I call it planned *ethnic cleansing/genocide.

Gaza was always a colonial project, just like the West Bank; which is nothing but a bunch small Palestinian land islands surrounded by ever encroaching illegal Israeli settlements.
At least Kushner; will finally be able to invest the majority of journalist chopping MBS' Saudi trust money. That near 3 billion dollars which he received from foreign oligarchs within months of leaving his daddy in law's White House should be put to good use and Gaza will have valuable investment opportunities once the ethnic cleansing and genocide are complete.

You're talking about "oblierating" 2.3 million Palestinians, mostly women and chidren (that's genocide) because the terrorist organization Hamas; estimated at 25,000 dominates them and enabled by Netanyahu committed a terrorist act on October 7th of which he responded at about the same pace as *rump did on January 6th. That they haven't allowed other elections is nobody's fault but the Palestinians that refuse to uprise and foster a revolution like downtrodden people have done throughout history. Where are THOSE protesters? It seems they expect everyone else to take care of them. Well, nobody is rushing to their side, their neighbors are sick to death of sending money only to have the government of hamas steal it and try and place their people's misery on Israel. Nobody is buying it any longer. As far as the idiot students that bought scarfs on amazon and thought that was action, the very minute they started harassing AMERICAN Jews, they lost most people's sympathy. They have nobody to blame but themselves for trying to teach anybody a lesson. They effed around and now they'll find out.

(105 posts)WTF did they expect from terrorists? You see, this has been their problem for the last 75 years. They lay down and follow the orders of anyone who tells them to suffer a little longer and the pesky Jews will somehow magically disappear. Well, this is what they've gotten, poverty, misery and war. And they will NEVER get anything else until they realize they are the weaker party, sit down and negotiate a settlement and stop waiting for the world to take care of them. NOBODY cares about them enough to send them arms, troops or money (that will only get stolen by their leaders for more weapons). Who do you see running to their side? Some soft headed college students buying ridiculous scarfs on Amazon and attacking AMERICAN Jews - that's what the world sees. You confuse loud and obnoxious with real support. You'll learn.

How Israel Secretly Propped Up Hamas
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/10/world/middleeast/israel-qatar-money-prop-up-hamas.html
We elected George W. Bush in 2004 but he's not recognized as the head of our government anymore because we didn't have a foreign power propping him up to be a dictator over us. The same can't be said for the Palestinian people in Gaza, Hamas was a tool of Netanyahu and they had the guns financed by Israel's government to dominate the Palestinians.
Israel wasn't funding the Palestinian people in Gaza or trying to lift them up, they were funding a terrorist organization to act as inside guards in the world's largest open air prison.
It's no wonder that the day after our election Netanyahu fired his defense minister; who had been calling for an investigation of October 7th.
You can cover your ears and eyes all you want, but this is ethnic cleansing/genocide.
Sundance1220
(105 posts)and yet you still can't help but blame Israel. You're just another who treats the Palestinians like children. Expecting nothing of them, allowing them to throw temper tantrums and then blame others and expect everyone to clean up their mess. You may have noticed that NOBODY is coming to their defense - none of the Arab countries want any part of them. But you go ahead and blame anyone but the terrorist organization THEY ELECTED. Your way has worked wonders for the last 75 years. Just let them suffer longer and more and surely those pesky Jews will magically disappear. They are the weaker party and until you and them understand that, they will continue to live in misery. And Israel will continue to thrive.
Uncle Joe
(60,148 posts)not to mention that we're all children.
What do you mean no one is coming to the Palestinian people's defense?
The vast majority of all the world's nations and peoples in the United Nations; which was created after World War II have come to their defense. We're the only nation standing with Israel by using our veto power, that's it.
Are you expecting Arab nations to wage war against Israel because Netanyahu's government loves it and is provoking them by expanding the conflict?
"Pride goeth before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, Than to divide the spoil with the proud."
Proverbs 16:18-19
The defense of ethnic cleansing/genocide does nothing for the Jewish people around the world and actually fosters anti-Semitism.
Sundance1220
(105 posts)Nope - nothing but clucking their tongues and doing NOTHING for the Palestinians. And for those who cast their "protest vote", here are some of the things the upcoming Secy of Defense has to say:
Pete Hegseth argued in his 2020 book that Christians should unite in a crusade against Muslims entering the United States to protect Judeo-Christian values, according to a new report on his past writings.
According to the Washington Post, Hegseth in his 2020 book American Crusade ranted about the dangers of increasing Muslim birth rates and claimed migrants leech off of social programs supported by the government. He also said Islam is not a religion of peace, and it never has been and that all modern Muslim countries are either formal or de facto no-go zones for practicing Christians and Jews.
Though insulated by distance and its traditional Christian fabric, the United States, Hegseth writes, is under a cultural invasion not just at our shore, its in your community and schools. In November 2019, his book states, 26 Muslim candidates won elected office in the country, and Muhammad is now a top ten boys name in America.
Our present moment is much like the 11th Century. We dont want to fight, but, like our fellow Christians one thousand years ago, we must, he writes. Arm yourself metaphorically, intellectually, physically. Our fight is not with guns. Yet.
He concluded by arguing that fundamental followers of Islam plan to conquer Europe and America via demographics and culture to destroy our nations Judeo-Christian institutions.
THIS is what this country just voted for. Well done. I'm sure the Palestinians living in misery are thrilled with those protesters.
Sundance1220

(105 posts)the word genocide bandied about - especially when it was aimed at the President - when no genocide was occurring. Then the protesters made things even worse by being so obnoxious - shutting down bridges, attacking Jewish students on campus and just, in general, being so annoying people stopped giving a crap about their cause. When the protesters started defending hamas, Americans had enough. It's their own fault that now NOBODY gives a crap. They have burned far too many bridges (pun intended).

(105 posts)you profess to care so much about would have chosen to continue to suffer while well fed and housed Americans decide teaching a party a lesson was more important than their lives. Because that's exactly what happened here.

(1,950 posts)Then I'm sure you will not join in the scapegoating, demonization, schafenfreude and back-turning that seems popular now. Because, since you care, you will know that is wrong for the people already suffering a genocide. Which, I may remind you, is being committed by Israel for 13 months, and which caused the loss of votes here. If you are unable or unwilling to make that connection, I can't help you.
Or you can go on deflecting, demonizing and abetting the surge of Muslim hatred etc in which case I have nothing further to say to you.
Sundance1220
(105 posts)When 98% if the people alive before 10/7 are still alive. Things are bad enough without you using words so carelessly, they lose all meaning.
I absolutely recognize anti Muslim sentiment is a problem and has been for decades. I also recognize it pales in comparison the uptick in anti Jewish sentiment. The numbers on that are quite clear.

(1,950 posts)Well now perhaps the two types of hatred will be more balanced, at least in the States. Nothing to be happy about.
Genocide denial is a real thing. It happens when some people are viewed as less than others. For example, when the killing of 1200 people is called a genocide by some but not the killing of 43,000 (much higher in reality). Even accounting for population differences, that's quite revealing.
To put it in perspective, that's equivalent to 7 million Americans dead. I wonder if it would be shrugged off so easily then. How about 200,000 Israelis? Perhaps those figures make you shudder, perhaps not.
The toll of the genocide is not just in the vastly understated death count, but in the many additional unreported deaths both direct and indirect. Diseases, epidemics, lack of medical care, dirty water, malnutrition and starvation and of course generational stunting and PTSD. Just the impact of no schooling for kids for years is enormous, as is the impact of the demolition of all 12 universities. Genocide is mental as well as physical destruction.
There is no other way to look at the sum of all evidence, in its totality, and not conclude this is a genocide forethought and well-planned. It's nothing short of evil.
Edited to add: About the death-toll undercount: there are at least 10,000 missing, presumed buried under rubble. That was at the endof November. The missing count was then discontinued. As for the official count of deaths, there is nothing worthy of that name. The hospitals, the counters of the dead, are gone. Which raises the question, who is taking care of the badly wounded, maimed and burned, most of them ending up dead too? Who counts them?
But aside from the counts, who will be held accountable for the massive, unfuckingspeakable human suffering inflicted on these defenceless people, most of them children? As long as there are genocide deniers, no one will.
Done here.

(105 posts)Is responsible for each and every death. They KNEW this would happen to their own people and still hide behind them. That's what people are going to be remember.

(105 posts)I'll put it this way. I have truly never before seen a people who never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
But I put a substantial part of the blame on those who have been whispering in their ears for 75 years telling them if they just suffer a little while longer, they'll soon be rid of those pesky Jews. That includes their leaders and those idiots protesters

(11,407 posts)Is going to do to Muslims, Jews, Hispanics, Asians and women. He loves the suffering of others. It gets him going. And he's about to get going on the American public. You thought a million deaths from COVID was bad? Wait until you hear about all the deaths in the concentration camps and troop deployments to help out his buddies the dictators.
Mass Deportations, slave labor, another great depression, sending American troops to fight and die for Mother Russia. Just a few things Funky Trumpy has in store for the idiots who voted for him.
No more conning, soft manipulation and propaganda for Trumpy. It will be forced onto the MAGAts like he forced birth onto women.

(367 posts)Trump stated that pro Palestinian protestors in the US should be deported. He's clearly going to make life hard for Muslims in the US with crackdowns on any anti Israel protests. He wants to end the war in Gaza by crushing Hamas and all of those who protest Israel and he'll give Israel all of the weapons it wants. He never kept that a secret.

(1,950 posts)If it were, you would not have lost it in a fit of anger and despair about your own fortunes which Gazans had no hand in. Nor resorted to victim-blaming.
Those who truly cared, still do. It's a f******* GENOCIDE.

(26,231 posts)chalk it a square deal and shut the fuck up about it for eternity or go the way of the dodo.
Now...for the next trick..educating lying motherfuckers what a genocide is at their own intentional direction.

Cheerleading for genocide, right here on DU.
Blocked for good.

(26,231 posts)I didn't demand and literally force the genocide into existence and lie since 10/8/23 that one was going on in order to disrupt the political system to install a fascist.
Grow up and take some responsibility for selecting the maximal destruction option because crazy, belicose, and really poor thinking.
You guys gamed this plan out and thought it was a winner?
Fucking CRAZY STUPIDITY.
Am I cruel now? Guilty but again, I can only assume that was the desired response because I don't see what the anticipated alternative was supposed to be.
If the thought was Chump's rule would be welcomed then that was way past delusional.
