Two Lacey parents are facing criminal charges, including assault and attempted kidnapping, after several bystanders had to step in to stop a father from strangling his daughter outside a school.
The incident happened outside Timberline High School on Oct. 18. The girls parents, Ihsan and Zahraa Ali were both arrested after the confrontation, and court records indicate it could be related to a possible honor killing.'
According to court records, the 17-year-old victim told investigators her father had recently been threatening her with an honor killing after she refused to go to another country for an arranged marriage with an older man. She reportedly went to her school for help, which then led to the confrontation outside.

LACEY, Wash. (KOMO) - Two Washington state parents are facing charges after several bystanders had to step in to stop a father from strangling his 17-year-old daughter outside a high school. Authorities say the incident was a possible attempted honor killing.
Josh Wagner was driving with his family Oct. 18 near Timberline High School in Lacey when he noticed what he thought was a group of kids fighting. But as he jumped in to break up the fight, he realized it was a man choking a teenage girl.
So, pulled over to try to get the kids to stop and realized it was an adult male who had a teenager in a headlock and subdued him til the police arrived, Wagner said. It was pretty angering. I didnt know what was going on, why it was happening. All the kids were screaming, yelling.
Court records state Ihsan Ali was choking his 17-year-old daughter to the point where she had lost consciousness, as her boyfriend and other students tried to pull her away. The teens mother, Zahraa Ali, was also grabbing at her and choking her, according to court documents.

(26,727 posts)I always wonder what part of "thou shalt not kill" has hidden exceptions that I can't read.

(88 posts)Is in the Koran, they are not bound by it by their religion. The Bible is not their holy book.

(26,727 posts)It's a version of the Bible.
Oh, and for what it's worth, I understand there is absolutely nothing in the Koran about women covering their hair or being veiled.
Of course, were I to express my full and honest feelings about all religions I'd probably be banned here.

(88 posts)The Koran makes reference to the commandments but are not bound by them. I think the covering of hair is actually mentioned (Orthodox Jews and Catholics also do it) in the holy books but not the covering of a face - that' is never mentioned.

(1,292 posts)It is especially prominent in South Asia, such as India and Pakistan, where caste systems and arranged marriages are still very common. But again, it all goes back to the same problem: Specifically, most females where gender roles, caste systems, etc., all have to be under the authority of a man. In this case, presuming they are from one of the three areas I mentioned, because the woman refused to go along with it, it was seen as a "dishonor", and killing is the only way to redeem it. I have read many stories about it. But again, it's religious fundamentalism at its worst, and trust me, it's not limited to those from the Islamic world. It happens in India as well.
Arranged marriages often involve lots of gifts between the two families, and to refuse the marriage or even ask for a divorce is seen as an insult to the family, particularly the men, who negotiated the deal, not to mention all the gifts that were bought. By making the marital problems known outside the family, it risks the family being dishonored and ostracized by the wider community. So they think that by killing the woman sometimes often her whole family, it will regain respect in the community. But again, it's the same thing at the end of the day: Men wanting control over women.
I am glad that she survived, but now I think she has to really be on guard because honor killings don't often just involve the parents. Often it is the brothers, uncles and other relatives who do it too because now that she exposed the parent's crimes out in the open, they now will see her as a dishonor to their family.

Thankful for the dad who stopped his car and intervened.

(1,292 posts)Particularly in the UK. Germany has a lot of Turkish/Kurdish immigrants. But again, I have said before that the environment to which they are in or from plays a big part of it. A lot of these people come from either war-torn countries such as Syria or Somalia or theocracies/dictatorships like Iran, Uzbekistan or India. The true number of honor killings is likely much higher than reported and convictions way lower.
Those fuckers will come after her. She needs a new identity and change of location to far away from there. Make it impossible for them to ever track her down.

(1,292 posts)Most of it is unreported and those who do survive it don't have any way to seek help. This is often because honor killings happen in very rural places. Often these women are flown back to their country where their family is from to be in a forced marriage in "shotgun weddings". She is very lucky to be in a area where people saw it because again this very often doesn't usually end well.

(88 posts)really think they could kill her in broad daylight in front of witnesses and get away with it? Where did they think they were? If they're natural born citizens, put them in prison, if they're not - jail them and then deport them (if you can naturalize, you can de-naturalize). The girl needs to be put in protective custody and perhaps the witness protection program is in order here.
