This makes me smile. trump's claim of a mandate is weakened by these numbers

(10,683 posts)Since our laws require we elect the EC vote winner regardless of who wins the popular vote, losing the popular vote creates an expectation that not only is the president not legitimate when they are elected, legitimacy through the support of voters doesn't actually matter. Hence the predictable slippery slope towards authoritarianism that our wonderful framers set us up for.
The more we elect somebody despite them essentially losing, the more the legitimacy of popular support ceases to matter entirely, and thus support for our democratic institutions.
