Republican voters think its fine to destroy their own economies by deporting immigrants. This will be happening throughout the country as undocumented workers move to cities to better escape notice or try to leave the country.
For companies in Springfield and in nearby communities that depend on Haitian labor, Trumps comments could prove damaging. The Haitians who filled thousands of jobs at area packaging and auto plants have helped rejuvenate once-blighted neighborhoods and contributed to the local economy in myriad ways.
While many food products lining the shelves of Springfields Caribbean stores are imported, many items bread from Florida and pinto beans from Nebraska are American. Chicken, beef and eggs served at Haitian restaurants are regularly sourced from local farms.
Recently, a Haitian community organization bought a former fire station it hopes to turn into a facility for English language classes, drivers education and a meeting spot.
I pay thousands of dollars in income and property taxes every year, said Payen, and because I work with Haitians to file their taxes I see their W-2s and so on. If these people leave, that money is gone from the city and the local economy.

(12,193 posts)Curiously, some Haitians, who do not have the right to vote unless they are citizens, have blamed prominent Democrats such as Bill and Hillary Clinton for destroying their country after a devastating 2010 earthquake killed about a quarter of a million people and displaced in excess of a million more.
Their Clinton Foundation, which ran dozens of projects in the country, had helped raise billions of dollars to assist with reconstruction efforts. But many Haitians believe the funds were siphoned off, which the Clintons deny.
Democrats just cant get credit for anything.

(11,978 posts)Though Trump may ultimately succeed in ending TPS for some immigrants, some legal experts believe that is unlikely to happen during the early days of his administration after his second presidency begins on 20 January.
Theres a fear among the Haitian community that TPS is going to end on 20 January, and I dont think that is very likely for a number of reasons, said Katie Kersh, a senior attorney at the non-profit law firm Advocates for Basic Legal Equality.
The strain any deportation effort would place on an already stretched immigration court system would be significant.
Even if the program was ended, Kersh says, current law allows for a court hearing that could take months or years to take place. Similarly, immigrants who have asylum applications filed also have an opportunity to have that application heard.
I think Trump believes that he has immunity to do about anything he chooses. He will ignore our asylum laws and deport undocumented workers until the economic consequences start affecting his billionaire backers and hurting their businesses. I suspect that Musk employs hundreds and perhaps of undocumented workers in his huge factory outside Austin. Of course, his factory will never be subjected to a workplace raid, but workers may fear it will and decide to leave.

Teslas Toxic Culture Has Spread to Its New Plant in Austin
Allegations of sexual harassment, racial discrimination, and dangerous conditions are now surfacing at another Tesla factory.
Bryce Covert
JoAn Rogers started working at Teslas Gigafactory plant in Austin, Texas, two years ago. It sounded interesting. It was something different, the 59-year-old said, and Tesla paid her $18.50 an hour to start out, which Rogers felt was decent pay. Rogers commuted an hour by car each way from her house to the plant, but she still arrived on time. She worked hard, getting good evaluations. I gave those people 100 percent of me, she said.
At first, she liked the job. But this past March, her area in a part of the plant called the general store, where workers received package deliveries, got a new, male supervisor. Soon Rogers noticed that any time he was near herwhether walking toward her or standing next to herhe touched and adjusted his penis in her sightline. It happened daily.
Rogers had never experienced sexual harassment from a coworker or supervisor, not even when she worked in a prison. So she asked her leada staff member who oversaw her teamto say something so that the supervisor would stop. As far as she could tell, the lead didnt address the issue with the supervisor. Instead, she started getting threatened with write-ups for things that werent her fault. So she escalated the situation, first up the chain of command and then to human resources. But human resources sent me right back around to the same people giving me problems, she said. They direct you to go back to your abuser. They wont fix anything. People in charge of her team took her aside to tell her that it was only going to hurt her if she talked to anyone other than them about what was happening.
Two other women complained about the same behavior, and still, nothing was done, she said. Then the man sexually harassing her started to write her up for everything that I did, she said. He just made life miserable. Tesla policy, she and other workers have told The Nation, is that someone with a write-up on their file cant be promoted or receive a raise or bonus, which prevented her from moving somewhere else in the plant. He wrote me up so I could not leave the department, she said. It was a nightmare.

(11,079 posts)be welcome in the Shenandoah Valley. Harrisonburg and environs have a long tradition of welcoming immigrants. This may have something to do with the pervasive Mennonite influence in the Valley and their tradition of "welcoming the stranger". The local Catholic Church (whatever you think of the Romans) is also active in welcoming immigrants. The public school ESL classes had, at last count, some 60 languages represented, yet somehow seemed to manage pretty well. And local industries, from poultry processing to organic farms, are always looking for workers.
