His ability to cow the GOP legislatures is limited. In 2 years he will be closing in on 81.
I doubt the dancing rallies will work. At his age and shape, it will become more macabre (if that is possible).
Importantly, he is a lame duck.
Looking at the swells in the GOP who want to run for POTUS in 2028. I dont think any of them is wowed by the charisma of Vance. Certainly not enough to not want to try to be POTUS themselves. Each one of the luminaries of the GOP looks into the mirror and sees themselves as President.
It may be cold comfort but even for intelligent self controlled adults, a second POTUS term is not that great.

(57,339 posts)The concern is that Trump will install himself as dictator.
He has talked about a dictatorship style role as head of government.
He has said no one will need to vote again.
He also claimed his first term was stolen from him due to the impeachments, etc.
So he should get two more terms.
So nothing is certain.

(26,727 posts)He actually served the full four years of his first term. He can claim his re-election in 2020 was stolen, but he served his first term. It was not stolen from him.
The far, far bigger concern ought to be that he somehow doesn't finish this term, and Vance become President.
A few months ago that was a concern here, but it seems to have disappeared.
Irish_Dem
(57,339 posts)He has insisted otherwise and the courts continue to back him up.
And congress gives him what he wants.
Of course Vance is plan b.
EdmondDantes_
(51 posts)Okay technically all but one.
Short of a constitutional amendment, which certainly isn't going to happen, he's not getting another term.
Irish_Dem
(57,339 posts)And that he is lying when he says he will be a dictator and no one will need to vote ever again?
The best predictor of future behavior of future behavior is past behavior.
Trump's past behavior shows us that he is a ruthless, brutal psychopath who will
break laws to get what he wants. He has a known history of criminal behavior.
This is science.
I will be happy to consider your hypothesis but I need data to back it up.

(26,727 posts)And how not a single insurrectionist has been jailed.
Oh, wait. The coup didn't succeed? A whole bunch of the Jan 6 rioters have gone to jail? Guess those are perfect proof of how easily he will declare himself dictator.

(57,339 posts)Going after the foot soldiers made Garland look like he was actually doing something.
Not one of the J6 managers, planners, funders were ever investigated and they never will be.
The insiders who detached the Dem congress panic buttons, who gave detailed plans and maps out,
who even conducted tours for the J6ers.
It is easy to go after the low hanging fruit. Garland took the easy way out.
And pretended to give a damn about justice and our democracy.
PoindexterOglethorpe

Perhaps the actual text of the twenty-second amendment will prove useful:

(9,402 posts)dont translate to our media to Trump. I get your point about Vance as an incumbent but he will have to run off the wreckage Trump has left us.
Vance is smarter but charisma wise, he is a cold fish. But, after this election I can truly say what do I know!

(62,646 posts)Even during his first term, Dump said Democratic interference should entitle him to additional years in office.
He is already making the same noises again while trying to dismantle other checks and balances.
Constitutional term limits matter only if they are enforced (e.g. El Salvador).
PoindexterOglethorpe
(26,727 posts)but he still served the full four years.
Can anyone here seriously imagine that he will be nominated again in 2028?

(16,385 posts)What and who is going to stop him from remaining in office? He's only leaving office feet first, but he still leaves behind Vance and little Mikey Johnson and a SCOTUS majority with a moral compass so fucked up, that they couldn't find there way to the toilet!!!
That man plans to remain in office for as long as he can!

(374 posts)That sounds like it would prevent someone that has been elected to office twice from serving part of someone else's term.
Not that that necessarily matters. It was how Putin kept power form many years - changing job titles without changing powers.
But we can hope some of the folk that have sworn to defend the Constitution would actually do so.

(5,413 posts)and it will be the first time in sixteen years (since the 2012 election) that Donald Trump's name is not on the ballot. He won't be holding rallies in support of other candidates; if he isn't the center of attention, he isn't interested. GOP/MAGA candidates will be on their own to carry on his "legacy." It's unlikely that anyone else could cultivate a following like Trump has done. The right-wing noise machine may try to manufacture a successor, but the cult IS going to run out of steam...

(4,129 posts)I have a nagging suspicion that he doesn't really want to be President; he just wanted to win a rematch against Biden to assuage his demented ego.
With that out of the way I halfway suspect he may get tired of the whole charade and just hand it over to Vance.
Intractable
(541 posts)He just wants the power to dismiss the cases against him, take revenge on his enemies, and intimidate world leaders into letting him build hotels in their countries.

(43,545 posts)Which might sound wild for us 2024 folks, but he's already "joked" about wanting to serve more than 2 terms, just like he's "joked" about other things that turned out not actually to be jokes.
And yes, he might be an ancient dinosaur in 2028, but if he's sentient, he's going to want to hold on to power as long as he possibly can for all the perks and the glories of the job (including his perceived immunity thanks to the Supreme Court). Of course the actual responsibilities and duties of the job he couldn't care less about, but that's beside the point.
Or Ronald McDonald and Colonel Sanders finish the job before then. And Vance will be our reality then.

I'm just hoping for a heart attack, stroke or whatever to take him out.

(26,974 posts)He'll then have the very powerful incumbent advantage and there may not be much of a primary.
Under Vance, they're likely to whittle down the election infrastructure enough that it will be impossible for them not to stay in power, and will probably figure out a way to get rid of term limits.
Worst case scenario, we could be looking at a 40 year Vance dictatorship.
We really are in uncharted territory.
