I do not think that he uses the part of the brain that made modern humans unique in being aware of the certainty of one's death. Not as often as most human beings, anyhow. Interesting question. I think it is more based on his brain functioning. Yet he may be aware that his mind isn't what it was a decade ago, which is closer to what you mentioned in the OP.
