Published 27 November 2024
We, the Heads of Government of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Norway, Poland, and Sweden met today in Harpsund, Sweden, at a pivotal time for our security. As a result of this Summit, all the leaders of the Nordic-Baltic countries and Poland, have agreed the following:
We are determined to shoulder our responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security as we face grave security threats and challenges. We are united by a shared perception of threats and readiness to do what is needed to counter them. The transatlantic bond is indispensable, and we will increase our collective efforts to keep ourselves and all our Allies safe.
We will strengthen our support to Ukraine. Our countries are the largest per-capita contributors of military assistance to Ukraine and our support will not waver. Ukraine must be able to prevail against Russias aggression, to ensure a comprehensive, just and lasting peace. In the coming months, we will step up our support, including to the Ukrainian defence industry, and we will invest in making more ammunition available to Ukraine. Ukraines courage and resilience will be backed by strong and steadfast support by our countries whereby military assistance is an integral part. We encourage others to do the same.
We support the Ukrainian Victory Plan. We are committed to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine, and its full European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
Russia remains the most significant and direct threat to our security in the long term. Russias illegal war of aggression against Ukraine and increasing use of hybrid actions have shattered peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area and gravely undermine global security. We will work together to constrain, contest and counter Russias aggressive and highly confrontational actions as well as to ensure its full international accountability for the crime of aggression. Together with our Allies, we are committed to strengthening our deterrence, and defence, including resilience, against conventional as well as hybrid attacks, and to expanding sanctions against Russia as well as against those who enable Russias aggression, thus threatening our common security.

(8,059 posts)Trump obviously has no idea what he's talking about in terms of NATO and its funding, but there's little point in complaining about the US's overbearing role in security and serving its own interests while relying on it as some sort of policeman, so it's good to see other nations taking on a more active role.
I'd expect this initiative to be backed by the UK, France and most of the EU countries, but someone has to lead the way. I hope actions live up to the rhetoric, but in this current limbo while everyone's waiting for the US's first moves under Trump, rhetoric itself does have an important role to play.

(58,034 posts)as the orange, turd soon-to-be-dictator has vowed to take the US out of NATO.
Europe is moving to take care of itself. The US under trump? Who knows what will happen? There's no possible alliance for us with economic and military rival China. None with Mexico and Canada who are planning tariff retaliation against trump's tariffs. The Pacific Ocean nations of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines the Pacific Ilses I believe will align themselves with Europe rather than trump's unreliable US.
Maybe North Korea's "Little Rocket Man"? What a joke.
What a disaster the orange turd monster has created. And what a disaster it is that a majority of American voters put the fool back in office.

(8,059 posts)He at least talks a good campaign, and some in Ukraine are encouraged as he's actually spent time there, shown some signs of being willing to listen, and doesn't seem to have many illusions about the danger of the axis that's developed around Russia on the international scene, which doesn't serve any of the US's interests, nor necessarily Trump's. He's also said that any negotiated end or pause to hostilities with territorial concessions would likely only be a fallback until Putin's finally out of the picture. He also doesn't consider any of Russia's nuclear threats to be at all credible as it's so outgunned.
Trump isn't going to get his boasted end to the war in one day. I've no doubt he'll get a pass from most of the media and some of his supporters for that. But from previous statements, Kellogg's strategy will involve pressuring Russia to the negotiating table by threatening to step up arms supplies to Ukraine, and actually going through with that threat if necessary, which isn't going to go down well with Trump's baser base because they've swallowed all the Russian propaganda about billions of dollars that could be spent on them instead being shovelled into a crooked far-away country along with kickbacks for the US regime. They're almost certainly beyond being convinced otherwise. Maybe Trump'll be able to throw them enough red meat in other areas in the early days to keep them distracted. Maybe Kellogg will be able to convince him that his image and place in history will be enhanced if Ukraine comes out of this better than any of us might have feared or hoped.
But this shouldn't be the US's conflict to resolve alone however it sees fit. If it wants to go isolationist, well, some leaders in Europe seem willing to step up. They have far more invested in whatever shape of settlement of the conflict comes about. I've heard the unfortunate term used: "Coalition of the Willing". I probably don't have to tell you why that title has unsettling resonances for me, though the concept is sound.
Meanwhile, Russia's economy is staggering along toward collapse. In the next six months or so, the pressures will only get worse and its international standing will only worsen.

That bit went right by me the first I read the statement. Now I realize that they're sending us (or Donald) a clear message. Too bad he's to stupid to understand it.
I had a feeling this was going to be about Ukraine when I saw the list of countries involved, and I am very glad they are banding together to provide more help to Ukraine, considering what the Orange Hellbeast is probably going to do once he's back in office. I feel terrible knowing that President Elect Dumpster Fire would probably be happy to feed them all to Putin one at a time, and I just hope to hell he doesn't get the chance.

(18,925 posts)I'm sure Canada will continue to be stalwart in their support for Ukraine, along with other NATO countries. But it makes sense to me that Scandinavia, the Baltics, and and Poland, being the countries who feel the greatest and most direct threat from Putin, would decide to get together to discuss how they can all best help to keep Ukraine out of Putin's clutches and help each other stay safe.

(46,866 posts)Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) is a regional co-operation format that includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden. Under NB8, regular meetings are held of the Baltic and Nordic countries' Prime Ministers, Speakers of Parliaments, Foreign Ministers, branch ministers, Secretaries of State and political directors of Foreign Ministries, as well as expert consultations where regional issues and current international topics are reviewed.
Poland is not either, but is has a Baltic coastline.
Germany has a Baltic coast but was not in attendance.
Lithuania was also not there, due to their still trying to form a government after their recent October parliamentary elections.
Another protest will be held against coalition with Nemunas Dawn
Organisers of the first rally against the involvement of the Nemunas Dawn party in the ruling coalition are going to stage another protest.
https://www.delfi.lt/en/politics/another-protest-will-be-held-against-coalition-with-nemunas-dawn-120065593
On Thursday, 21 November, a second demonstration is planned near parliament to demand that the Social Democratic Party (LSDP) and Democrats For Lithuania would terminate their coalition agreement with the Nemunas Dawn, whose leader Remigijus emaitaitis is accused of antisemitism.
"As we were not heard the first time, we will gather again. Democratically elected politicians have to work for all the people of Lithuania and should not simply ignore those who criticise them," the organisers of the rally wrote in a message on social network Facebook.
According to them, the decision of the LSDP and Democrats For Lithuania to create a coalition with the Nemunas Dawn has caused damage to Lithuanias reputation as suggested by numerous reports about emaitaitis in foreign media. They believe that terminating the coalition deal with the Nemunas Dawn might help avoid further damage. This time, President Gitanas Nausėda is also asked to use his authority among voters in an attempt to make changes in the ruling coalition.
The first rally titled Ten Minutes of Silence (Deimt tylos minučių ) was held last week in Vilnius, Kaunas and Tauragė. However, Social Democratic prime minister-designate Gintautas Paluckas did not meet with protesters near parliament, claiming that the coalition was a done deal and discontent should have been voiced before the coalition agreement was signed. New Parliament Speaker Saulius Skvernelis, leader of Democrats For Lithuania, did not meet with demonstrators either. Whereas MP emaitaitis claimed that he treated the protest against him as "a sign of respect".

Lithuania has been a significant donor to Ukraine, and has signed a bilateral security cooperation agreement with it (as have a number of countries quietly in the background over the past year), so there's no reason to think it won't get on board with this initiative from the Nordic-Baltic Summit.

(3,294 posts)tests from Russia at their northern border and at sea. We spent two weeks in Norway with a dear friend high up in the health ministry this June. Military service is the norm. One of her two older sons who is now a policeman left for a year-long special assignment along the Norwegian-Russian border.
Norwegians live with the tension. Fortunately for them, thanks to their nation's extensive oil reserves, they have the money to defend themselves well. That's how they are also able to have free healthcare and education.
