Usually I am hoping that Democrats will alleviate the worst consequences of voters voting for Republicans. But I'm tired of it (after 1976, 1992, 2008, and 2020). We saved everyone after COVID. We tried to restore democracy after the coup / insurrection. We even tried to save Republicans from themselves in the House of Representatives by saving Mike Johnson so Ukraine aid could pass. But now, I want them to feel everything that they voted for in 2024. I want the high prices. I want the economy to crash. I want them to live in the cesspool that they voted for. And I want them never to forget that they are "finding out..."

(15,005 posts)I have watched this unfold like a slow motion train wreck my entire life, going on 50 years of some sense of what was going on around me and it has always been there, and has gotten more engrained and exponentially more out of touch with reality with each passing year.
I don't know how we can turn it around. It is slowly becoming accepted as fact, and with this election they have totally unchecked power to tranform our systems of government and education to make what they "know" as reality what it is taught and expected.

(3,504 posts)mode. The Republican politicians will just seek to keep power by whatever means. They have no interest to learn. It is the voters that voted for Trump that need to learn but I suspect most are incapable and, short of some very huge calamity, will just grasp for the next scapegoating ideas still searching for the easy and quick answer that does not exist but they will not admit that nor do the hard mental work to reason their way to anything else.

(56,691 posts)Not just for me, but I have family back in the States, most of whom is not as well off as I am, much less as well as off as my Germany-based daughter is. I should probably be OK no matter what, but my siblings, my U.S based daughter, her children, my nephews--they could get caught up in any serious collapse. As much as I want that for every single person who voted for Trump that has an IQ of 80 or higher, I don't want it for my family or friends.
What IS frustrating is that anything short of that, and the Trumpanzees will find a way to twist any other scenario into meaning that everything is hunky-dory. Only when they go bankrupt or get deported by force will they ever be forced to confront the fact that their vote had serious consequences beyond being able to smirk in our faces. Elon Musk and Fox Noise will not make their house or car payments, and beating up some shirtless guy at the Rio Grande who would have been willing to pick our strawberries at $6 an hour so no one has to complain about inflation isn't going make them feel better, either. Either way, Musk can still afford to buy his adulation, and they will never get theirs.

Hell, there were legal immigrants who have attained citizenship with undocumented family members that voted for Trump! May their families be mercilessly separated! No sympathy!
Lose your Obamacare? Oh well. They were within a thumbs down of John McCain doing it in 2017 but narrowly scraped by. Go ahead. Eliminate health insurance. People will suffer but thats what they wanted.
Inflation? Bring it on. Because Trump WILL blow a massive hole in the debt with tax cuts which will increase interest rates. Combine that with tariffs and they wont be able to afford anything.
Lets see. Social Security will be insolvent within a decade and itll be on Trump to fix it. You dont just fix that system overnight. Therell HAVE to be measures taken soon to shore it up. Or eliminate it as we know it. Oh but wait
. The sees the debt issue.
I see a possible scenario of a total economic meltdown within a decade. The question is will a Republican be in the White House.

I share your disgust, but starting in 2025 I plan to be as active as possible in the Resistance, or the Opposition, as Marc Elias named it. For now I'm still grieving, but we need to be as strong as we have ever, ever been.
We need to push back hard. to just sit by and watch it crumble is not a viable option.

(469 posts)....in truth, it isn't in my DNA to sit back and do nothing. It is the Democratic Party's job to save America from Republicans. The pattern has been a part of our politics since the corrupt Nixon Presidency. I vented in this post, but I want to share something positive in the next. While it is fun to see MAGA and MAGA adjacent people realizing what they voted for, in truth, we have responsibility to see that all of us don't suffer the consequences, and even yes to help them (Pres. Biden and VP Harris modeled that over the last 4 years). At the end of the day, we can resist, but there are many things out of our control, so some of this is just a natural consequence of people's ill informed votes.

Most others work similar expenses won't last as long as she will. On her own, without access to the wealth three generations of frugal ancestors accumulated, she wouldn't last a year.
How dare you suggest sacrificing my daughter to teach people who voted for Trump a lesson. Yes, it is that personal.

(655 posts)pisses me off. The people who are rooting for the MAGA idiots to suffer don't seem to grasp that it's not just them who will suffer but also Harris supporters like your daughter, and other innocent Harris voters who didn't vote for this bs. They are no better than the MAGA idiots who vote against their own interests in hopes of screwing over minorities despite cutting their noses off to spite themselves.

(34,421 posts)is such that people are at the point of "let it burn," even if we're burned too. After so many cycles of Americans acting like clueless idiots, some people feel that *everyone* burning is the only way for MAGA idiots to wake up.

(655 posts)even worse than the first term was. My worst fear is he could cause a second great depression and create a fascist state. I read Project 2025 about year ago when it first came out and was mortified by it and got behind Harris despite her not being my top choice for a nominee because it was just that bad. I don't know why you would think I would believe something outrageously stupid such as thinking that I would believe Trump's second term wouldn't be bad. I have friends and family member who will get screwed over by Trump's policies such as if he gets rid of ACA and the tariffs that he would implement will affect their small businesses. I don't get any joy out of seeing MAGA idiots suffer at the expense of seeing people I care about suffer. That's like telling me my worst enemy gets to have their legs chopped off but in return I get my arms chopped off. That is a pretty crappy exchange in which no side wins.
I have lived in the South for most of my life. I have lived in NC since I was 11 and I'm 41 now. I mention this because I have more exposure to the MAGA types compared to the regular person on DU due to being in the South and know how they think. I can tell you assuming that the MAGA idiots are going to wake up after everything is burned to the ground is dangerous thinking. It's not guaranteed they will change their minds. They are already in too deep in the Trump cult. If anything, they will double down harder and blame everything on the democrats. That's how I see this playing out granted I would love to be wrong, and see them come to their senses, but I don't think it will happen. I have dealt with nut job conservatives for most of my life and it's very rare they ever admit when they are wrong. I didn't see it during the George W Bush years despite all of his fuckups they still would double down on supporting him and I don't think I will see it in this second Trump term.
Realistically these people will never see the light because they are blinded by hate and vengeance against minorities, lgbtq, etc. The only hope the country has and the democrats have is that the people who didn't vote realize how bad the situation is with Trump and come out and vote to save the country like they did in 2020.

After 2 years of hell perhaps America will wake up and make a change.
Who knows, perhaps the felon can get a 3rd impeachment before he's gone.

I'm effing sick of it. I swear to God it feels like we're literally living in a type of Twilight Zone parallel universe. WTF!?!?!
Since the 11/5/24 election I've pulled away quite a bit from the news, articles, and videos. When I see pictures or video clips of V.P. Harris I start crying. Last night a friend and I watched the Zoom that she and Governor Walz conducted this week. They are LIGHT.
My feeling is that we are The Light fighting them - The Dark and I'm SO tired. I'm 67 y.o. and I'm tired..... And so very, very sad....
And another thing, I STILL haven't gotten over Bush v. Gore (which was why DU came about in the first place). I feel VERY strongly that if Gore had been in office as President, his administration would have paid attention to the Presidential Daily Briefings, the chatter, and everything that was going on and 9/11 would NEVER have happened.... ..........I'll never forgive Sandra Day O'Connor...
