"Amerika" (1987 miniseries imagining a future U.S. conquered by the Soviet Union)

Anyone remember this? It was one of those odd occasions when normally safe 80s TV decided to dip their toes into sci-fi or speculative fiction and throw real money at it (Other examples including "The Day After," the two "V" miniseries and "Twin Peaks). Big budget imagining of what the U.S. would be like if the U.S.S.R. both won the Cold War and took us over.

My dad was a military officer who (no other way to say it ) had two mantras:
Better dead than Red
I hate the fucking Russians

Korean Vietnam War Era - Green Beret.

Made us watch it. He had several nights of PTSD nightmares after watching this and Red Dawn.

Also - we had to do survival training in the Adirondacks, this girly girl can kill and field dress game, and he liked to point out that if escaped enslaved people could get across the Niagara river - so could we.

I'm brainwashed so will see myself out of the discussion now.

Lt Col USAF, B29 pilot. Korea, Vietnam
He also had the first two mantras.
However, no direct combat like Green Berets.

You get the idea.

Ludicrously simplistic right-wing jingoism.
Overthrowing Soviet forces with loudspeaker trucks reciting the Pledge of Allegiance? Rifle-toting farmers taking on the Red Army? It felt like an NRA wet dream.

The introduction explains how the Russians brought down the U.S. military defenses. Years ago, on DU, there was a discussion about this aspect of the plot.
