Three Small Problems With Trump's Joking-Not-Joking Suggestion About Annexing Canada As The 51st State

1. They don't want to join. (The war of 1812 might have been a hint.)

2. If they did, that would be a permanent blue state, with two permanent blue Senators, and a bucket of Electoral College votes. (Given that all four of Canada's federal parties are far to the left of the Democratic Party, the Senators would probably only caucus with the Ds, and spend most of their time hanging out with Bernie Sanders.) Heck, there are 10 Provinces. Why not TEN new blue States?

3. If you're really hellbent on expanding the number of States, how about starting with the States that WANT to join?

Washington DC and Puerto Rico should be STATES!

Canada, Oregon, and California. Or, at least British Columbia, Oregon, and California forming the republic of Pacifica.

(Probably not going to happen. California, Oregon, and British Columbia have been trying to eliminate DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME for years, but never succeeded. Too much red tape.)

SORRY! HOW COULD I FORGET WASHINGTON! My entire family is from Washington, way back to 1840! My mother and brother were born in Seattle, and my dad in Sedro-Woolley. Poulsbo was founded by my ancestors.

Honestly, it must be early onset Alzheimers. Sorry, I don't know how I could have forgotten Washington, of all places. It's one of the places where my heart lives.

which is different all the rest. I don't think they'll give up French as an official language without a fight, maybe literally. I don't know enough about Nunavut to comment: its population seems to largely be First Nations/Native American and English is not the primary language.

The "let's merge with Canada" people seem to forget that the two countries have gone their separate ways after the American Revolution and have evolved different cultures. It's hard enough for the various sections of the US to get along all the time - and I for one do not want a monarchy.

It's ceremonial in effect and could be unilaterally abolished by an act of Parliament and consent of all provinces.

As for hooking up with the US, and especially given the current state of affairs, I doubt many Canadians would be in favour (i.e. let's continue being best friends and allies but nothing too serious beyond that).

I have trouble understanding why the people of any country continue to support a hereditary monarchy, in which one person by accident of birth is considered to be superior and worthy of near-worship while the rest of the population struggles to get by. (Why, yes - I just finished Q: A Voyage Around The Queen, by Craig Brown).

Another point that many of the "let's join up with Canada" enthusiasts overlook is that a large part of the US was never British territory. Much of the lower midwest was colonized by the French and Spanish, the southwest, Texas, and California by the Spanish. The Ohio Valley was controlled by the British, but they forbade Americans from settling there (or tried to - a great What If? is whether the British could effectively unite the Native Americans under Tecumseh or someone else to keep the US penned east of the Appalachians). We learn about Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion in school from an East Coast perspective, but IMHO this neglects the millions of people who were there at the time. So let's stop trying to wishful-think our way into some Anglo-American super country in North America and start working on trying to save what we have.

the whole concept of Canadian confederation came much later. So although people who lived in Canada may have taken part, it was under British supervision.

Canada was involved in the burning of Buffalo in 1813, the invasion by the US at Queenston heights in 1812, the naval battles on the Great Lakes and other military events, but the fighting was largely confined to the "frontiers" (which is way Andrew Cuomo totally ignored the War of 1812 centennial when he was governor of New York - it didn't hit any "important places".)

Fun fact: there is still a cemetery for War of 1812 veterans near the part of Buffalo where I grew up. It's not easy to find, but it is kept up to some extent.

We'll have to invade those countries and send in tanks and troops and drones. And we (democrats) would be on the side of Mexico and Canada.

What a mess.
