Yes, I believe that in general, the super rich -as expressed as those owning more wealth than 50% of the world, are the problem.

Not at all. Your economic success is based on merit. If you cannot succeed, you don't deserve to.

No. The resulting beneficiaries of the income gaps are a consequence -but not a cause, of our flawed system of government.

No. It's far more complicated than that (explain in comments)

(121,395 posts)The super stupid have made it possible for the super rich to become super rich. Some very stupid people don't want restrictions on the accumulation of wealth because they stupidly believe they, too, could be rich someday.
The super rich are not the problem. The system that rewards the most antisocial among us and gives them immense power is the problem.

(24,741 posts)Those wealthy few are now ultra-super-mega wealthy and re-focusing on leveraging their wealth into raw political power, especially control and influence over the *cough cough* "poorly educated". For convenience and caution, the wealthy have aligned with religious fanatics, misogynists, and racists, who now form an effective front line in the assault on democracy while the wealthy call their plays from the backfield.

(6,245 posts)This is the part that bothers me the most. I don't object to wealth per se, but I sure as hell worry about people like Musk and the other tech-bros using their wealth to influence politics, misinform people, and create a system that gives them even greater wealth and influence.

(36,372 posts)Great wealth can be used for good. Greed is the problem. The uber rich mostly get that way through greed, so there it is, but there can be exceptions.

(1,932 posts)The GOP has embraced the classic WC Fields saying: never give a sucker an even break, or smarten up a chump.
The rich have used lies and fear to convince the stupid to vote against their self-interest. The rich own the mass media and have lobbyists to make sure the tax laws let them get everything they want. The poor and middle class have ... no lobbyists, no massive campaign contributions, no influence at all on the people making the laws and controlling our economy.
People complain about Bezos while doing all their shopping at Amazon. People rail about Musk and yet we have X/Twitter embedded at DU and innumerable government publications. People despise Zuckerberg but won't give up their friends list on Facebook. We're all idiots being taken for a ride. I feel like we're gleefully taking candy from Hitler while making the smallest of polite noises about how ugly some of his policies sound.
Extreme income disparity is a symptom and a telltale warning of serious instability in our future.
I joke about investing in Guillotine futures, but seriously, the only constant is change. Our democracy is not stable and if history teaches us anything it is that the anger of the mob is hard to control.
