President-elect Donald Trump hasnt even taken office and congressional Republicans are already taking cues from Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy and the pairs new playground, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
GOP lawmakers immediately lined up against the original short-term government funding bill released this week after Musk voiced his opposition. On top of that, a group of extremist Republicans, led by Sen. Rick Scott and Rep. Andy Harris, are fighting to ensure that the fresh round of tax cuts Republicans have planned for Musk when Trumps 2017 tax law expires are paid for with $2.5 trillion in spending cuts on programs Americans rely on chosen by you guessed it Musk.
Republicans have made their plan for the new year crystal clear: ram through massive tax giveaways for the ultra-wealthy and corporations, and pay for them by shaking down programs and agencies that working families rely on. And theyre putting unelected and unaccountable oligarchs Musk and Ramaswamy in charge of deciding how much pain Americans will have to tolerate so that the rich can get richer.
Contrary to Musk and Ramaswamys claims that DOGE will put money back in taxpayers pockets, nothing laid out in DOGEs scattershot plans shows any serious understanding of improving efficacy and efficiency. Rather, its just the latest iteration of conservatives decades-long crusade to, as Grover Norquist famously said, reduce government to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub combined with their perennial obsession to cut Social Security benefits for seniors.

Whatever happened to that guy and his one manufactured hit song?

(3,548 posts)Assuming Dems sit on their hands after voting NO when these dumb ideas come up for a vote, I suspect enough Repugs will realize MANY voters will be unhappy with offsetting tax cuts for the rich and corporations by cutting SS and the Meds and not be supportive either. It does get a bit trickier if they offset tax cuts with tariffs although that is really a tax on all that when the increased costs come home to roost as inflation will also be a bite in the butt for Repugs. Unless they are going to get smarter and trickier and play chess instead of checkers it won't be much fun to be a Repug legislator running for reelection again.

(51,581 posts)Thing 1: Those programs run outside the General Fund on their own tax bases. Is he proposing getting rid of the benefits and keeping the taxes, which amounts to a huge tax hike, or getting rid of the taxes too?
Thing 2: If he gets rid of the taxes too this will cause huge problems for the rest of the government since the rest of the government relies on that money for short term funding.
Not a thing but an observation: the GOP claims they want to run government like a business. The four agencies that have always been on the GOPs shit list are the Social Security Administration and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (which run like private-sector insurance companies), the United States Postal Service (which runs like a private-sector delivery service) and the National Rail Passenger Corporation (which runs like a private-sector transportation company). Its a bit unbelievable to consider the Republicans want to run government like a business when theyre hell-bent on getting rid of every agency that really does run like one.

(4,516 posts)That makes it more attractive to small businesses so they will go along with giving HUGE corporations one more tax break on not contributing into Social Security. MAGA fools will think they are getting a tax cut when they look at their little pay stubs. But if they live long enough to no longer be able to have their labor exploited, they find out they are SOL.

(19,694 posts)and reminding them they should be smart enough to see Fascism raising it's ugly head and what they
are going to do about it, stand up with some backbone or cower down in fear of Musk's wrath? Doing
the latter means you were never worthy of being an elected official to begin with and we'll vote you out.
But if you stand up to tRump & Musk you need not worry about a primary challenger because we'll stand
and vote with you. (It's OK to lie to them, they do it all the time)
Secret to standing up to tRump & Musk might be secret ballots on all the House and Senate votes
if that is even possible.
