Presidents have tried to identify areas of inefficiency and redundancy before - notably Clinton had Gore lead such as effort. The big difference is Gore had served in both the House and Senate and had been serving as VP. He had the background to lead a team that could look at whether changes might make the government more efficient.

I like the point Murphy brings up that Trump's spoken goals are rarely his real goals. Two other points might be that neither "head" has any experience in government ... yet, before any study or even organizing a task force, they have declared they can achieve a likely unachievable goal - saving billions.

It would always be good that anytime the deficit is mentioned the fact that nearly a forth of the debt was accrued in the first Trump term AND his tax cuts are responsible for a portion of the deficit added to the debt in the Biden years. A budget is not impacted just by expenses, but by income (in the government's case that is mostly taxes.)
