"SNIP............
Donald Trumps team has told European officials that the incoming U.S. president will demand NATO member states increase defense spending to 5 percent of GDP, but plans to continue supplying military aid to Ukraine, the Financial Times reports.
During his White House campaign, Trump vowed to cut off aid to Ukraine, force Kyiv into immediate peace talks, and leave NATO allies undefended if they failed to spend enough on defense spooking European capitals.
But in a boost for allies deeply concerned over their ability to support and protect Ukraine without Washingtons backing, Trump now intends to maintain U.S. military supplies to Kyiv after his inauguration.

(3,690 posts)they already are. Second, Trumps pretzel logic is worse than we thought. The man who says America First is telling other countries to band together for mutual defense. Like most of the time he talks, Im confused.

(2,501 posts)...(no big surprise) that when it comes to the NATO budget, Trump has been lying all along.
I have my own theory about why Trump keeps this delusional line of thought going: he's basically plagiarizing the WSJ editorial page, not to mention the ideologues on Fox/Fox Business/OANN/etc. As far as I can tell, they started the whole "make Europe pay its share!" nonsense because they hate countries with strong social safety nets and stable, happy populations. (They apparently don't care that removing those things make political upheavals and revolutions much more likely).
Trump is amazingly uncreative. The Media Matters group noticed that early in his first term; they compared his Tweets to what was on Fox "News" at the time, and they noticed that there was a 10-to-15-minute lag between a subject being discussed on Fox and Trump ranting about it on Twitter, often plagiarizing quotes and statements as his own. He's been obsessed with the NATO issue for the better part of a decade. My guess is that Trump saw someone talking about NATO budgets on Fox years ago, and it somehow dovetails with whatever idiotic schemes he has about making money overseas. Otherwise, I can't come up with a reason for why he would even care.

(2,501 posts)...I guess, but the irony that's lost on the WSJ (particularly since Murdoch took over) is that it's bad for business, which requires some modicum of cultural stability. And you're right, that's not who these people are. They much prefer smash-and-grab criming.
