Everything was going relatively smoothly for Donald Trump.
Coming off a decisive electoral victory last month, he had appeared to corral his party behind even his most controversial Cabinet picks and was enjoying decent public approval. He promised to create a strong economy. Tech titans and foreign leaders are clamoring to meet with him or fund his inauguration.
Then Wednesday happened.
Two shocks to the system this week have cast Washington into chaos as Republicans scramble to avoid a self-created looming government shutdown and weather a market slide at the peak of the holiday season.

Worse to come.
Markets are tanking, US, Australia, probably elsewhere too.
A collective cringe.
Expect worse to come.

No capable general would consider what happens after a battle.
Things may become unstable, and if that is a worry, may I suggest:
Stocking up on non perishable foods and household items - canned foods, toilet paper, sugar, coffee, tea, alcohol (if you are inclined that way), etc.
Don't forget a decently long supply of pet food.
Consider buying stuff you rarely buy, like flour.
Who knows, prices may go up, supply lines may be disrupted.
Stocking up on perishable foods that can be frozen - meat, milk, bread, juice, if you have freezer space.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.
