"The Six Triple Eight" is based on the inspiring story of the 688th Postal Directory Battalion, the only Black U.S. Women's Army Corps. that was actually sent to Europe during World War II (if you have any trouble memorizing this historical fact, don't worry, the movie will repeat it many times, including thrice in rapid succession right before the closing credits). Their mission was to fix the broken postal service, which was preventing correspondence from reaching the soldiers' families and from reaching the soldiers themselves, which had a catastrophic impact on their morale.
They were given six months to fix the problem and got it done in 90 days (Kerry Washington mentioned this when she was on The View this week).

(60,810 posts)but I think you oversimplified what happened. The mail was disrupted because of the Battle of the Bulge, in which all of the army transport was diverted to assist in the near disaster of that final German assault on the US lines. Because of that the mail backed up in the rearward depots and wasn't picked up from front line units promptly. The women of the 688th pitched in and solved the problem in record time, even though their training had nothing to do with that specific task. It's a great story and I hope the movie does it justice.
