Hundreds of Madison high school students walked out of classes Friday afternoon and marched to the state Capitol building in response to Mondays shooting at Abundant Life Christian School.
Students from West High School chanted no more silence, end gun violence and books, not bullets during their nearly three-mile route to the Capitol. East High School and La Follette High School students joined them in front of the building, where speakers called for stronger gun control measures and increased mental health resources in schools.
Many students said they were compelled to speak out because they no longer felt safe going to school. Others said they felt desensitized to gun violence because of school shootings in the past year alone. I am fed up with the fact that our peers at (Abundant Life) had to experience this horrifying tragedy and that this event was not even unique but rather part of a nationwide trend, West High School senior Aharon Shelef said in remarks to the crowd. I am fed up with the fact that guns are the leading cause of death among children and teenagers in our country, so we can't just go to school or live our lives without worrying if we are next.
Three people died in the shooting Monday, including a teacher, a 14-year-old student and the 15-year-old shooter. Two victims remain hospitalized in critical condition. At the protest, students called on lawmakers to enact stronger gun reforms, including stricter background checks for gun owners and restrictions on assault weapons. Students are no longer able to access education without a fear for our lives, and it's unfair. We must face the reality that gun violence is not just a problem. It's an epidemic, said Ella Crew, a West High School senior. There must be a neutral agreement for gun control for the sake of all of our children.

(121,395 posts)There have been at least 83 school shootings in the United States so far this year, as of December 16. Twenty-seven were on college campuses, and 56 were on K-12 school grounds. The incidents left 38 people dead and at least 115 other victims injured. https://www.cnn.com/us/school-shootings-fast-facts-dg/index.html

(30,231 posts)now I know that no matter what happens with a school shooting... nothing will change.
The right loves guns more than children. They have no empathy. They will go so far as to believe that it was fake and everyone involved were "crisis actors"... or now it will be "AI generated" or something.
I didn't like the GOP starting with Nixon... disliked them more under Reagan. I started hating them with Newt and the government shutdown ( I worked for the federal government in the best job of my life then ). Now I don't even know how to describe my feelings for the GOP. Mentally ill people. A mixture of genocidal rage and pity, I guess. I mean I want them all gone from my world, but I don't want to actually kill them.

(18,216 posts)The school where the shooting happened this week was very small. But there are lots of other high schools in Madison and those kids are the ones who went to the Capitol yesterday. When there is a shooting at one school, all children are affected.

School children get thoughts and prayers. Guns get protective legislation.

(11,341 posts)This is great that these kids are taking action. But, let's start with their parents. Since they are going to a Christian school, one would make the assumption that their parents are the "God, Guns, and Gays" type of voter. Tell your parents that your right to go to school without fear negates their gun worship. They need to stop buying the GOP party line that "Democrats are going to take away your guns." Because, in some cases, maybe they should.
