The Jim Carrey version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a close second, though.

Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, anyway. The fact that it's set during the Christmas season is totally irrelevant to the plot. Set it during Easter or the Fourth of July and absolutely nothing changes.

It could take place on Labor Day or Valentine's Day and precisely nothing about the plot changes. It's the same exact movie with, at best, slightly different decorations in the background shots. Its message, if it can be said to have a message apart from "thieves bad", has zero to do with Christmas.

Ergo, not a Christmas movie regardless of what the writer says. I don't consider Gremlins a Christmas movie either, for the same reasons. Both are movies that happen to take place during the Christmas season and that's about it.

Just my opinion. That and $2.50 will buy you a coffee. 😁

The original novel was set during Christmas and was the main element that was retained for the movie. Plus the films themes are about family, redemption, forgiveness and reconciliation. That sounds very Christmas to me. There’s a reason his wife’s name is Holly.

So once again, inconsequential to the plot of the film. And I don't regard the wife's name as of consequence, either. As for the party, meh. Could've been a party to celebrate the opening of Nakatomi Plaza and, once again, nothing changes but the background decor.

We shall, it appears, have to agree to disagree on this one.

I like a lot of the others, but this one hits home for me.

SNL nailed the the real liberal ending.

No matter how many times I see it, I always sniffle at the end. "No man is a failure who has friends."

I hadn't seen so much as a single scene and didn't know the first thing about it. All in all, I really enjoyed it. I loved the way the story followed George over several decades with a focus on Christmastime. It really established the characters in a slow burn plot. There were corny elements, but it has aged relatively well. The sugary sweet ending was a bit much, but it was apropos to wrap things up in a bow. It is a bit derivative of "A Christmas Carol" but adds enough to the story to get a pass.

The movie does give off a slightly creepy stalker vibe at times, but is still fun.

Not only the best Christmas movie, perhaps my all time favorite of any genre.

But there are some classics I haven't seen, so the pool of films I'm selecting from is narrow.

Lethal Weapon accepted as a great Christmas movie? It also takes place during Christmas and even opens with "Jingle Bell Rock" and a scene involving some Christmas lights IIRC.

It has even more Christmas elements than Die Hard…but since Die Hard is a better movie, Lethal Weapon kinda gets lost in the shuffle.

The best movie for any holiday.

It has Elves, snow, and a Golden Ring. What more do you need for an Xmas movie?

From 1952. Cary Grant and Betsy Drake are parents who have their own kids, but are talked into taking in a couple troubled foster children. It’s charming, predictable and yes, schmaltzy. Reminds me very much of my childhood because my natural parents also took in foster kids. My parents weren’t Cary Grant or Betsy Drake, but they were very kind folks with very big hearts. And solid Democrats throughout their lives. Merry Christmas y’all!

I think everyone should see Rare Exports. It's a Finnish horror comedy from 2010 about what happens when men drill into the tomb of the real Santa Claus. I watched it once, years ago, and the memories still make me smile.

Have fun, do something you haven't done in years.
Meet up with an old friend again.
Give up a little vanity for a greater good.
Listen to kids singing.
Do a favor or two for those who work hard.
Count blessings and voice appreciation.
And remember that one small, empty stocking: the angle's sermon left for the bishop to give, well, no matter what one's faith, those words matter.
