Thank you Jimmy Carter for your military service, your service as a government official and president and thank you for your work for humankind post presidency. Most of all thank you for being the kind, warm humble servant that you have given an example for all of us to be.

(8,060 posts)when Carter was attending. Both were engineers. Dad had graduated from college in 43. He was in the V-12 program, spending about 4 months at Annapolis over the winter of 43-44. He never met Jimmy, but was slightly aware of him. Dad served on a LST, an ensign later LTjg. He was present in Tokyo for the surrender. He passed in 2011.

Compassion. Integrity, Empathy, and Joy all come to mind. His legacy is one to be admired, particularly now.
Stay the course, my friends. Using Jimmy as a guiding light, we too shall prevail over the storm.

(40 posts)Jimmy Carter was my official first pres though I was 4 when we immigrated. Was walking past tv and saw that big smile, I was entranced. I looked at his eyes and he was so kind, I felt that a 4 yr old, of course didn't know the word for it. Then a bit later I looked at Regan, suffice it to say, it was not the same. Thats all I'll say of that man on this thread.
I have perked my ears each time Carter made the news, lifelong.
I am sorry for such a soul energy to leave us here, but am so glad he got his wish to vote. You made it Jimmy! May his memory always be a blessing. Rest in peace and power Mr, Carter from Georgia.

(6,951 posts)He shook everyone's hand who was there and thanked them. My husband retold the story with pride for 30 years. Not everyone gets to shake the hand of a man as good as Carter.
I helped mostly with food, "gofer" duty and clean up since I am not very handy. He liked my pickled peaches and asked for the recipe with my address. I found something to write it on. A year later I got a note from Mary Prince with a picture of dozens of mason jars full of peaches on the kitchen counter and the President sitting there eating the few that not fit in jars right out of the pot warm.
He was the same generation of my parents. I have a special love for President and Mrs Carter. They were the best people.

There is a port of no return, where ships
May ride at anchor for a little space
And then, some starless night, the cable slips,
Leaving an eddy at the mooring place . . .
Gulls, veer no longer. Sailor, rest your oar.
No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore.

How Dare George F Will write and publish an article like that, not unlike many other lying pieces of crap rhetoric all of the New RepubliCONs are infamous for........
President Carter was one, if not the, finest person we ever had as a President and as a Human Being........
I am so glad that his passing was during Biden's Presidency, so Trump couldn't mis-treat his funeral and bad mouth him like he did with McCain.........

To claim that Reagan was a necessary antidote to Carter is a convenient fiction that relies on a selective memory of history. It glosses over Reagan’s disastrous policies, reckless rhetoric, and the far-reaching negative effects his presidency had on the nation and the globe.
First, let’s dismantle the idea that Reagan was “necessary.” This argument presupposes that Carter’s presidency, though flawed, created a vacuum that could only be filled by Reagan. But to claim necessity is to miss a critical point: the forces that led to Reagan’s rise were not the inevitable result of Carter’s failures; rather, they were the consequence of a deliberate and highly successful campaign by greedy corporate interests, the military-industrial complex, and conservative elites to shift the political discourse far to the right.
The necessity of Reagan was not the result of Carter’s policies but of a decades-long process of ideological capture that co-opted the Republican Party and manipulated the national conversation toward an extreme version of conservatism.
Now, let’s talk about Reagan’s actual record. To label Reagan as wise or even effective is to ignore the lasting damage he inflicted on ...

President Carter shows what good a person is capable of if they are truly determined to make a diffference. He and Roslynn made a big difference and I will always love and revere the both of these great human beings!

(15,573 posts)the first President that I voted for who won.
I was too young to vote for JFK and Lyndon Johnson. I was abroad in 1968 and, having never voted for President before, had no way to vote at that time, but would have voted for Hubert Humphrey. I voted for George McGovern in 1972 and for Jimmy Carter in 1976 in person and by absentee ballot in 1980.
I was abroad when I heard that Ronald Reagan had won in 1980 and realized - even at the time - that his election would make a seismic difference in US politics. I just didn't realize at the time how bad things would ultimately get.
How different America would be now if Jimmy Carter had won in 1980! I can only believe that we would be a better nation.
