"Save it. Go 50."

At the height of the gas crisis during the Carter
Administration, I remember the President beseeching us to conserve fuel. He wore his sweater and talked about eliminating jack-rabbit starts and stops while driving.
To this day I accelerate slowly and drive just below the flow of traffic.
Got 50 mpg out of Priuses since 2004.
Jimmy Carter made a lasting impression.

I built myself a cruise control that instead of maintaining a set speed, optimized fuel consumption.

Partially inspired by President Carter and people like him.

Since back in those days there were long swathes of open mostly unoccupied roads I was able to test it several times without fear of impacting other drivers around me with it’s unintuitive variations in speed and acceleration.

A very interesting ride. Similar to a bicycle.

anybody following you go nuts!

Your invention's effect is identical to a cruise control on an under-powered
compact car; dropping in speed every time you hit a hill...

Everybody else is trying to maintain a set speed...

“It’s the journey, not the destination” crowd. Even identical routes would yield very different travel times. Admittedly, this device was crude and setting the saturation points on the extremes was difficult. It did routinely yield a doubling of fuel economy, though.

Interestingly, modern hybrids have similar logic in them.

sitting at a gas station for an entire afternoon waiting for a gas tanker to re-supply the pumps. There was a serious shortage that forced conservation because you had no choice. When you have no choice, behaviors do change.

and I am absolutely loving it. More money in pocket for other things. I don't hotrod and I drive sensibly, and if people want to go around me, they are free to do so.
