How long will it be till someone comes up with an alternative to Facebook that is good enough to cause another mass exodus?
I shiver with delight at the possibility.

(1,492 posts)There is no real alternative to FB in terms of keeping contact with family and friends. Sorry, but for that reason I am not going to give up FB. I have photos I share with family and friends, and I like the different NON-POLITICAL groups over there. It is the best way to maintain contact. I have Instagram, but I rarely use it. I don't care for and don't use TikTok.
I still use Twitter/X because there are groups and topics I like to follow having nothing to do with politics. I am also on Bluesky.
Not everything is about politics.

(24,816 posts)Bluesky is definitely NOT comparable to FB. There is a FB-like alternative out there I just started exploring called Tribel but it remains to be seen if it will grow into a viable alternative.

Occupy Democrats is a dodgy clickbait site that pushes fake news and CT far too often, all in a cynical cash grab, plus it has stolen content with little to no attribution many times.

(3,284 posts)Bluesky has emerged as a sane alternative to Twitter. Now if only someone would come up with a sane alternative to Facebook, then everyone could dump facebook like they've dumped Twitter.

(3,409 posts)Thankfully.
They allow the user to control their own experience to a remarkable degree. Nice to have a woman as CEO. Seems to have a more pro-social outlook than the South African billionaire does. I think a number have people have expressed willingness to pay for an account, but it's still free. And no advertising! Refreshing.
As for FB, it has such a large number of users that it is unequaled in organizing, unfortunately for my desire to get rid of it. I manage several organizations' Facebook pages and groups, so leaving is not an option unless I'm willing to stop volunteering.

(4,012 posts)BlueSky and DU are working for me. facebook is mostly ads or sponsored shit, lots of those do misdirects and try to scare you (VIRUS!!!) into calling their call center.
And now with this latest, no fact checkers and backing down on DEI bs, that is enough

(481 posts)I have 3 ideas
1. He is just purely sucking up to Trump, this is way too simplistic he lived through the other 4 years of Trump and he's got a lot more money and power now.
2. He's got whatever billionaire disease that hit Musk, Thiel and Bezos. He's always been a little creep but this stuff seems way to quick for me. Musk has been on the path to total insanity for years.
3. He see's that even though half the US hates Musk and has abandonned X the other half loves his and is embracing X and now Zuckerberg figures this is what can save FB/IG. Maybe he's anticipating Musk burning out very soon and X collapsing so he wants to be positioned to pick up the refugees.
Honestly I'm not sure which is true but I'm leaning towards #3

(15,523 posts)Without all the "Surveillance Capitalism" which requires massive tracking of everything you post, and auctioning your data to advertisers, instead of giant data centers the size of a small town, small operations can work fine. (and AI is exponentially increasing the power and computing demand, for reasons that few people outside the porn creation world can make use of)
Craig's List started out with a computer or two in Crag Newmark's closet.
I don't know much about it now, but get this: Craig sells ads to users with something to sell. All the others sell users to advertisers, and in the most disreputable way.
Surveillance Capitalism
Harvard Business School:
https://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Pages/item.aspx?num=56791
Abstract
In this masterwork of original thinking and research, Shoshana Zuboff provides startling insights into the phenomenon that she has named surveillance capitalism. The stakes could not be higher: a global architecture of behavior modification threatens human nature in the 21st century just as industrial capitalism disfigured the natural world in the 20th.
Zuboff vividly brings to life the consequences as surveillance capitalism advances from Silicon Valley into every economic sector. Vast wealth and power are accumulated in ominous new behavioral futures markets, where predictions about our behavior are bought and sold, and the production of goods and services is subordinated to a new means of behavioral modification.
The threat has shifted from a totalitarian Big Brother state to a ubiquitous digital architecture: a Big Other operating in the interests of surveillance capital. Here is the crucible of an unprecedented form of power marked by extreme concentrations of knowledge and free from democratic oversight. Zuboffs comprehensive and moving analysis lays bare the threats to 21st century society: a controlled hive of total connection that seduces with promises of total certainty for maximum profitat the expense of democracy, freedom, and our human future.
With little resistance from law or society, surveillance capitalism is on the verge of dominating the social order and shaping the digital futureif we let it.

(6,153 posts)Not following this logic, and there actually are many other sources of information than X.
Are you saying that Xitter and DU are the only sources on your radar at this time?

(10 posts)Ive been on twitter for yrs and it was never like it is now. Never. During the elect, pro trump posts were elevated. It was crazy. If you think you can win a nation Election with the richest man in the world manipulating voters, you're crazy. I fear not enough attention is being put on twitter and how narratives start their and find their way into the mainstream. Elon Musk is worse than Rupert Murdoch ever was
Lulu KC
(6,153 posts)It is truly an echo chamber now. Many people do not want to give EM an opportunity to make any $ with their usage. I used to enjoy it for immediate access to reporters on the ground, but they're not there anymore. Few want to support EM, and there is no point in trying to engage in any discourse there anymore. The bots just eat real voices up.
I don't sense any lack of awareness about it, here or elsewhere. I hear you saying that Democrats are somehow oblivious to it, but I have seen a massive turning away since EM bought it and even more so since BlueSky started. What makes you think anyone's not paying attention?
TheDudeCa
(10 posts)And it was like this before the election. The guy would promote Trump ads to the front page and shit on Kamala. Whatever they were accusing facebook of in 2016, Musk did that and then some.

(20,326 posts)If Elon Musk is so terrible why do I get the impression you want more people to join you on X to
fight the influence he has in the world? Meanwhile making him richer by being on X seems self-
defeating. Plenty of OPs on DU encouraging people to quit X, why don't you take their advice?

(10,928 posts)each privately owned and with terms of service that permit changes and sales at-will by the owner and otherwise minimizing any rights of users (including free speech or privacy rights).
Imho, we might as well all have saved ourselves a lot of trouble and stayed on MySpace or Friendster, unless and until we actually have a platform owned and controlled by the users (like a credit union, which not only charges no fees to maintain a checking account there but actually pays interest on the balance and generally treats members much better than commercial banks do).

(32,025 posts)At least that's my opinion. Twitter is mostly for breaking news before the media has time to write an article. It's good for emergency stuff. Fortunately much of the media is on BlueSky. I like that you don't have to be a member to read posts and comments. My Democratic House member is not yet on it. Neither is my Democratic city council member. They're still just doing twitter and fb.
I also have two fake Keanu Reeves following me...
Jack Valentino
(1,616 posts)because most of my followers are "fantasy spam girls" or scammers offering money, which I dearly need at the moment...
Now sadly I am filtering my female "followers"-- by whether they look like a "real woman" or whether they look like a "model photo" scammed from the internet--- with which I am overwhelmed
Don't even get me started with the "personal messages"-- almost half of which are now "account deleted"...
If I had a dime for every account offering me money or some kind of-- whatever--
I could buy a few more beers! jajajajajjaa
I was almost taken in by one, who had a good "back-story" on their account,
until they directed that I must join some Chinese messaging app....
Their account was later also deleted.
Think they claimed to be a highly placed corporate officer with a big US corporation,
giving out money for Christmas---
That would have actually been a VERY GOOD public relations gimmick for any such big US corporation,
drowning in money---- but they don't give it away, do they.
Merry Christmas.

(32,025 posts)I think Pat Dennis might be real. (I follow independent media and local politicians, so maybe that's where he picked me up) However, none of the people I follow are following me.
I may follow him, but I don't know if he's real. He is followed by a local columnist, who I follow on bsky.
He's also followed by the Texas Trib Editor, so I think I will follow him:

(1,616 posts)I got placed onto some lists, which were posted and reposted, had over 1000 followers in two weeks, which may have a lot to do with it...

(34,983 posts)it's just an app, not PC. My younger sister told me about it - when I mentioned it to my 21 year old daughter she knew all about it. It's a little tougher to navigate so far (for me).
Of course there will be alternatives. Zuck is an idiot - FB is run with advertiser $$ and they don't get hits if half of the people leave.
Also I love Bluesky - I'm on there the most now.
