Many Democrats don’t think they’ll see a woman become president, AP-NORC poll finds

NEW YORK (AP) — Democrats are harboring strong feelings of stress and gloom as the new year begins. And many are questioning whether their party’s commitment to diverse candidates — especially women — may lead to further political struggles in the Donald Trump era.

A recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that a significant number of Democrats believe that it may be decades before the United States will get its first female president.

Specifically, about 4 in 10 Democrats said it’s “not very likely” or “not at all likely” that a woman will be elected to the nation’s highest office in their lifetime, according to a December AP-NORC poll. That’s compared with about one-quarter of Republicans who feel the same.

While despondency is hardly unique for a political party after a high-profile loss, that finding reflects the deep depression that has set in among Democrats about the country and their party after Trump soundly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee.

Less than four years from now. And I will be here to see it happen. That’s where my two cents are.

What was the polling this past election year amongst republicans when asked do you think it’s likely that a Republican convicted felon and serial lying moral degenerate will be elected president, based on whom you will vote for?

No way Harris can win a Dem primary now, and the same thing for AOC (at least not for a long time).

Despite my being a 28 year old mixed race lesbian of colour, an atheist, and a big Buttigieg supporter since 2019, I absolutely will not vote in our primary for anyone other than a straight white male Democratic candidate in the 2028 Dem primaries. I am even worried if our pick is not a Christian (Cuban, Pritzker, and Shapiro are Jewish, and unfortunately antisemitism runs riot up and down the US culture, including in our own Democratic party, and there it is far from limited to just some Arab Americans and some white activists).

Why do I say all that? Because above all else, we need to win, the world needs us to win in 2028.

No more dice roles in 2028 with gender, religion, sexual orientation, and race atm.

The US, post Obama and post Trump's two wins and the rise of MAGA, is, on balance, too racist, too homophobic, too religiously bigoted, and too misogynistic to gamble on deviation(s) from those flashpoints playing a role in yet another POTUS loss (in 2028 and likely for multiple other elections down the road).

Misogyny, racism, nope, Americans will not allow this. We are going in the opposite direction, with the war on women happening here. Men are too afraid, men are brought up to see women as weak, powerless, and less than. Perhaps 20-year-olds today will change that, but I won’t be around to see it.

And the GOP churches that "She's one of us, boys"...
She would be made to look acceptable, some RW "intellect", either an international businesswoman or someone with State Department chops.
Nicky Haley came close, but she was too exotic for a majority of GOP good ole' guys and gals, and just a bit more patronizing than competently diplomatic.
If she had been Nichole instead of Nimrata, I think she might have had a bit more of a chance to break off a few more never Trumper types back in 2020.
And if Trump wasn't in the picture in '24, it would have been possible for her to run against Vance, DeSantis, or the other jerks in the GOP primary - and win their nomination.
Vance was the Tech Bros nominee. DeSantis would have pulled in the Evangelical vote. But Wall Street and old school US Corporate leaders would probably have preferred Haley to both.

Trump only won because of the Anti-Christ factor. He's the luckiest evil SOB I can think of.

But both Clinton and Harris both came very close and if some more people voted in 2016 and 2024 in the swing states, either/both might have won. If people would just stop staying home, we might actually win instead of constantly being discouraged and depressed. 🙄

Margins against her and Clinton were among the lowest ever. The Electoral College is a ridiculous, undemocratic anachronism that no one else in the world has. I get that we are stuck with it and that it determines the Presidential results, but the popular vote is a much better indicator of how much support a candidate had.

We had two excellent choices for women presidents in the last 15 years. As much as I thought Hillary was eminently qualified, I thought Kamala had a better chance. But the problem was that social media (and the social media channel Pox "News&quot has too much influence and ruined both of their chances. (Hillary's chances weren't helped by the phony email story.)

I would love to see Kamala run for California governor (as has been rumored) or try to run again. (Hell, Nixon lost and won.)

Maybe intelligence will finally beat the maga nitwits.

But yes, clearly Dems have had two chances to rally behind a woman and rebuke a fascist, and both times Dem turnout came up short.

I'll be surprised if our 2028 nominee is anything other than a white or maybe Latino man.

It wasn’t a day out here and some men were saying no more female candidates. Keep repeating it……. I’m so over this! Harris ran for office against two former presidents for what 110 days and lost by 1.5 %. If you care fix the electoral college and get on with it. I don’t know what percentage of Dems stayed home because they felt President Biden had been pushed out! More than likely we screwed ourselves by the late transition.

Don’t run a woman again if you want to win. I can live with that. It’s more important to defeat fascism, much more important.

When HRC was running, my brother told me he talked with long time D who said they would not vote for a woman.

Just face the fact that this is a deeply misogynistic country, accept it and move on- there are bigger battles that have to be fought and won, or it’s going to be the end of the country forever, and lots of people are going to suffer and die.

I personally will not vote for any woman in a primary. I’m a woman by the way.
