Those of us who didn't vote for Trump will be getting what we do not deserve as well as millions of others such as children.

(23,984 posts)A back up laptop for my son and we also brought an extra tv for our bedroom when our 10 year old one dies. I also stopped buying from Amazon since Election Day and have been buying stuff on eBay for blue state sellers. And try to find stuff from local stores. But I will only be buying foods and shopping more at Costco. I was also thinking of buying a back up cell phone when mine or my husbands dies.

It was a 2 hour block on Thursday evenings and the manager inevitably scheduled her for 5 pm to closing on Thursdays. She could always get it rearranged but just the fact that she had to do it infuriated us.

(592 posts)A little at a time, as I could manage. By my figuring, I'm currently at a little over 6 months stock, if we use it wisely.
Mostly necessary stuff, but some luxuries - I don't classify imported dutch-process cocoa, grits or popcorn as actual food, but It's nice to know we have it. Gallon jars full of dry things like grains, cereals, and the entire legume family. I'm filling canning jars weekly and the freezer is full. I figure the canned stuff can last a year pretty well. The freezer stuff will lose some quality after 6 months but will be useable for 6 months after that. The dry stuff - who knows?
I'll keep going till I hit a year (when things start expiring) or I run out of space or money. We'll start using the oldest stuff up and hopefully be able to replace it and keep cycling through. If by some miracle, we don't hit a crisis, we'll just eat it anyway and save a lot of money. At least it's good food and not expired MREs and powdered eggs. But I expect things are going to get a lot tighter, Meals out will be impossible, imported goods will be unavailable, and everything else will be a lot more expensive.
In 2 years, we can vote to change the legislatures and start turning this thing around again. But it'll take years just to get back to where we are now.
Damn, I'm going to miss coffee. That's got the shortest shelf life of all.

(22,978 posts)get larger bags of those things. I was once a Tupperware dealer and have a large number of larger food storage containers which conveniently stack together and save room.
TIP: even if you have an instant pot, dried beans purchased more than 6 months ago should be soaked just to soften them a bit.
Another thing we will stock up on is pasta. I will probably go back to making my own spaghetti sauce as it is cheaper than the jarred varieties.
Some things we do not have to be concerned about because of proximity: Our local burger joint/dairy store is based in Oklahoma and all the fresh dairy used in the store is delivered directly from the farm. We will not need to worry about ice cream either since they make a number of varities. (PS the milk is NOT raw)

wnylib
(25,183 posts)short supply, chocolate might not disappear completely, but it will become a rare treat. Companies that make chocolate products will be hurt economically by high prices which they will pass on to consumers, who will buy less, further hurting those companies economically. End result would be a scarcity of chocolate products at prices too high for the average consumer to pay except on special occasions. Common candy bars, hot chocolate, chocolate syrup, chocolate muffin and cake mixes, chocolate chips would all be affected. Companies might switch to carob if the countries that produce it are not affected by tariffs.

(1,267 posts)I've been stocking up as best I can, but with limited space and money it's just not going to more than hopefully smooth out some things. In the end, none of us are going to get out of paying more unless we've been prepping for years with non-perishable foods and other supplies. Never had the money for that, so I'll just have to do without some things.
As long as I can feed the cats and the dog, I'll get buy. I would hate to have to give up the Internet. Don't care about the landline, I can use WiFi for my cell phone (or the one bar of service we get out here). I like having Dish, but since I get that with my mother, I guess we'll keep it. She wouldn't want to do without it.

(16,192 posts)And Ive always kept a very deep pantry of basic goods down there, along with my home canned food.
I have things like lentils, beans, pastas, oatmeal, rice, chia seeds and quinoa- stuff that we eat regularly. I also have commercially canned foods like Greek olives, marinated artichokes, Thai curry paste, tuna, etc. Again, all stuff that we use.
I generally keep about a year to a year and a half with of food down there, though Ive extended that on some goods.
I seal all of the dry goods up in jars, using an attachment to my vacuum sealer.
Currently pressure canning some breakfast hash. Will be pressure canning some chicken and some pork later today or tomorrow. I have enough canning lids to last the next four years- Ive always kept a deep stock of those. Theyre so expensive now that I wait until I see a good sale or a coupon offer. Im not comfy using off brands so I stick with Ball.

Nutritional supplements
Things I use every day (from paper towels and toothpaste to shaving cream and antiperspirant)
Shoes and clothing--nothing fancy, but when I find simple, good products I tend to get two or three of an item.
I don't know how this is going to work, but one motivation for the extra buying over the past several years is that starting January 20 I am going to attempt to cut my discretionary spending to as close to zero as possible (excluding fresh food, which can't be stocked up really). Other than that, my dog has health issues that require constant ordering of medications and foods---I wanted to, but in the end was unable to, stock up for him too.
I think this is a great topic!

So let me get this straight:
Voters supposedly voted for the FELON because President Biden's good economy wasn't fkn good ENOUGH, and now they're panic buying in anticipation of how badly Trump will fk things up???

Anyway, a few cases of Costco black beans, one 15 lb sack of pintos and one 15 lb bag of brown rice, so I guess so. I would do more if I could.
I'm more concerned about the war on facts and what may lie ahead for journalists who have spoken the truth, and who have a constitutionally guaranteed right to do so. This is really alarming.

(592 posts)Hoarding is awful. Even during the Covid shortages, I never once took the last of anything, let alone extra that I didn't need immediately.
But buying extra now, assuming you're able, is perfectly all right. Anybody else is able to do the same if they want to and if they're able. If you can, you're lucky. Not greedy.
mahina
(19,341 posts)thank you for that. You are right, put on our own oxygen masks first, make sure we can take care of ourselves so we can help take care of others. We are not victims.
About greed though. My Kumu's Dad (hula teacher's Dad) used to take her to the beach often, a few blocks away from their home. We still gather at that hale (house.) Kumu passed in 2023 but I think of her with love every day. The family is still in that house. I'm seeing them next week
Anyway back to the beach...they would fish, gather opihi (small shelled yummies) and enjoy each other's company. She felt really happy to be with him. One day when they were finished gathering some opihi she popped one in her mouth.
He let her know never to do that; to be greedy in Hawaiian culture is about the worst thing. Wait till they got home and shared.
Just a part of my bones. aloha everyone.
