I am glad that Rachel is coming back five nights a week for the first 100 days of TFG (aka the Felony Guy) term

Maddow, who scaled back anchoring duties after the spring of 2022, holding forth only on Mondays, will return to five nights a week at that hour as part of a broader move by MSNBC to draw viewership to its coverage of the first 100 days of the Trump administration. Alex Wagner, who anchors 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, will take on a special assignment: traveling the U.S. and overseas in a bid to talk to both newsmakers tied to and people affected by Trump polices during his critical first weeks in office.
The idea is to give MSNBC viewers a full, 360-degree view of whats happening in the country in a way that you dont necessarily get in the studio, says Wagner, during an interview. Both she and Maddow are expected to return to their regular roles after April 30.

I don't dislike Rachel, used to listen to her daily back in the Air America days, but I stopped watching her on TV years ago.

I don't get why she smiles so much when dicussing serious issues.

(2,266 posts)"The post-election exodus saw Maddow plunge to her lowest ratings in nearly 10 years, netting just 86,000 in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic two weeks after Trumps win. While post-election ratings dips are fairly standard, and Maddows ratings have slowly trickled upward since the holidays, her Jan. 6 total of 1.61 million viewers (117,000 viewers in the demo) is still down from her January 2024 average of 2.2 million viewers.
The shift follows a November report that Maddows $30 million salary was cut by $5 million last fall as part of a five-year contract renewal."

(235 posts)Maddow is incapable of getting to a point in a reasonable time, and the tangents to things done 50 years ago, makes her very skip able. She's also prone to hyperbole, that's a tv thing as Wagner is also prone to it. It got to the point where I would fast forward the podcast through the first 20+ minutes because I didn't need to hear yet more about Spiro Agnew. She desperately needs to be tightly edited, but that's not going to happen unfortunately.

She reminds me of Paul Harvey, if you're old enough to remember him: "And now, you know the REST of the story."

(235 posts)I don't really think that the connections she draws provide any real use. If it was a quick thing it would be easier to ignore, but when I got to the point I was finishing a 45 minute podcast in 15 minutes and being frustrated, it wasn't worth it.

(294 posts)Now if you want a 1-2 punch MSNBC, move Chris Hayes to Katy Tur's slot, Katy to replace Andrea Mitchell and hire Keith Olberman for Hayes former spot.
Just a thought. Oh yeah, replace that couple you have on in the morning with elevator music or infomercials or a camera pointed at a wall with paint drying.

(10,493 posts)Comcast owns them, so no problem with rights. All Sky News editorial team would need to do is make the output more "American" with more stories focused on North America and then the rest of the world than UK news.... Would also be good to compete with BBC News by being more global.
But yeah, that morning coffee has gone bad and been put in the microwave a little too often for reheating and no amount of coffee creamer and sugar can resuscitate that coffee.

(10,450 posts)... good move. I know most people would not agree with me, but Rachel (and Jen) on Monday does not work. She should do weekly shows - for what she's making. Either that, or give her half of Meet the Press with a counterpoint co-host. I would change their prime time line-up - but keep Lawrence. They need to get something done with the morning and afternoon weak spots, too...

(19,243 posts)I like Alex all right, but I 💙 Rachel, and the idea of her covering the first 100 days of Trump 2.0 sounds great to me!
I took a break from watching the nightly MSNBC shows back in December, because I was just overwhelmed by all the bad news. Tbh, I was overwhelmed back in November but kept on watching for a while out of habit. Then I was sick with a flu bug in the early part of December and hardly wwtched TV at all for a couple of weeks... and found I didn't really miss it that much!
I have been trying to watch more since the start of 2025, because I want to stay informed, but it's been hella depressing. A 2 hour block of Rachel and Lawrence 5 nights a week sounds like just what I need right now, and temporarily or not, I have this to say to Rachel:

Maddow, a staunch Trump critic for the left-leaning network, had been hosting her show just one day a week on Mondays since spring of 2022.
Variety reported that upping Maddow's new, albeit temporary, schedule was "part of a broader move by MSNBC to draw viewership to its coverage of the first 100 days of the Trump administration."......
"She also leads a schedule-busting concept known internally as The Avengers that MSNBC uses on nights of exceptional news. Maddow sits for multiple hours at a dais with a shifting lineup of MSNBC personalities that range from Joy Reid and Nicolle Wallace to Ari Melber and Stephanie Ruhle."

The full week for Maddow will start on Tuesday Jan. 21, the day after Trumps inauguration.
Alex Wagner, who had broadcast for the 9 p.m. hour Tuesday through Friday with Alex Wagner Tonight, will instead begin a reporting tour across the U.S. examining the effects of Trumps early policies. Both shows will return to their normal schedule on May 1, the network said.
Maddow is critical to the networks success. Wagners show pulls in less than half the number of viewers Maddow reaches, Nielsen data shows.
