At Guantnamo Bay detention camp, tents go up and troops await detainees

https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2025/02/04/guantanamo-bay-immigrants-deportation-flights/

"Less than one week after President Donald Trump suggested detaining tens of thousands of migrants at Guantánamo Bay Naval Base, dozens of tents have gone up, troops have flown in from North Carolina and the first few detainees were en route Tuesday.

... Last week, Trump ordered the construction of a detention camp at Guantánamo Bay that he said could hold 30,000 people, nearly doubling ICE’s detention capacity. ICE has detention capacity in the United States for about 40,000 immigrants, with about 2,000 beds at the largest facilities in its network.

Satellite images reveal that around 59 tents measuring about 18 feet by 36 feet have been erected at the base in recent days, along with 31 smaller structures, according to a Washington Post review of imagery from Planet Labs.

... “We appreciate the partnership of the DOD in getting that up to the level that it needs to get to in order to facilitate this repatriation of people back to their countries,” Noem said in an interview with NBC News’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday. “So remember that Guantánamo Bay, clearly, by this president, has said that it will hold the worst of the worst, that we are going after those bad actors.”

Ooooookaaaaay.

Imagine all the writers and editors at the Washington Post who took classes or visited museum exhibits or watched films or documentaries on concentration and internment camps, tut-tutted those horrible, benighted, or evil governments, and are now writing breezy stories about tents going up in the law-free zone of Gitmo. The American press corps is going to have to account for its insipid conduct during this time at some point.

The Guantanamo Bay Lease is for a naval base, not a concentration camp.

It is a court operated by the Organization of American States.

Cuba is not an OAS member but has a legal cause of action against the USA which *is* an OAS member.

And because the USA is an OAS member, it is bound by the decision of that Court.

then the USA is occupying Cuban land without even the color of a legal right to be there.

I would think that's pretty significant in how we are viewed.

Furthermore, as an OAS member, the USA would be inviolation of treaty if it refuses to vacate after the Lease is rescinded.

The US considers it a lease. Cuba has never cashed a single check from us because they did not agree to anything. We went where we were not wanted.

Or that Cuba has never cashed our checks as a form of protest.

You can find numerous articles about it, as well as information in history books.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/will-cuba-now-cash-55-years-worth-of-guantanamo-rent-checks/

For more than 50 years, Cuba has refused to cash the checks because it hasn’t recognized the legitimacy of the lease the US entered into with the country in 1901, which the Cuban Constitution says gives the US “complete jurisdiction and control” over Guantanamo. (The US Treasury sends the checks through the Swiss embassy, which represents US interests in Havana.)

from 9/11 and bring them to Gitmo while your at it. Trump wants to kick off Saudi LIV golf at his golf courses, but I feel everything should be done to spoil his efforts.

They are way overdue for their interrogations. Dubya seemed to forget back then.

Mmmmhmm, sure. By what measure? From what court?
This is just blabbering bs to placate the masses who will hear that nonsense in a sound bite and say "Yeah that makes sense to do that".
Our country is screwed, not only because of our current so called leadership, but because of the masses of dipshits who are too distracted, too disengaged, too easily manipulated to understand what is happening.

Of course their and that accounting does not include new folks slipping in every day because they just want to look like they are doing something. Certainly will keep all aspects of law enforcement and now the military tied up doing what essentially amounts to busy work.
