California seeing one its worst flu spikes this century, experts say

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/california-bay-area-flu-season-cases-increasing-20159536.php

While COVID-19 is finally easing this winter, the flu is still raging across California. Following a nationwide trend, the state’s flu season is turning out to be one of the most intense in recent years, with increased deaths and hospitalizations.

“This is shaping up to be one of the four worst influenza seasons this century,” John Swartzberg, a clinical professor emeritus at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health, told SFGATE.

According to data from the California Department of Public Health’s weekly report from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, statewide influenza activity is “high and increasing,” while cases of other respiratory viruses including COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are low.

California is one of several states with “very high” flu activity, a Centers for Disease Control map shows, with a flu rate of 27.8% as of Feb. 1. That puts California only slightly behind the national flu rate of 31.6%. And in the Bay Area, flu cases are high in several major cities, including San Francisco, San Jose, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Redwood City Fremont, Vallejo and Novato, according to data from WastewaterSCAN, a Stanford-run program that tracks viral traces in wastewater.

…since I got my shot several months back. If there even is a booster this early.

Other than that, the usual applies: masks, handwashing, etc.

not sure what it is. I almost never get seriously sick but would always get the common cold. After Covid I didn't get that either as I continued to mostly wear a mask.

But for some reason I came down with something recently and the cough is really bad. I think it is becsuse I was exposed to very cold air and for about a month I was driving with the car heater not working.

14. Check out RSV symptoms. Get an OTC expectorant to help the crud move. Hot tea.

Call your doc for advice. I came down with RSV before the vax came out and was sick as a dog — worst cough I ever had: it got close to making me throw up. Sorry if that’s TMI, but don’t mess with it.

Get well soon.

about 15 years ago with the flu even though I had the flu shot early in the fall. They said I had a flu
not included in the flu shot. My luck, which at that time was no luck at all.

I am mostly staying home. I even bought a new gym membership which I am not using because of the risk.

I also got the flu shot, but will do the same as Hekate posts above. I will call my doctor about a booster.

If I do have to shop, I go at oddball hours and wear a mask; gloves too.

since Covid. I use Kroger's "Click list", where you place your order online, then pick it up (they bring it to your car)
at the pre-arranged time. What you do is a good way to protect yourself. If I had no alternative, I would do it like
you do. Hell, I used to do my grocery shopping in the middle of the night, but since Covid, they don't stay open
24 hours anymore. I'm basically a hermit now. That's a shame about your gym membership.

But I actually enjoy grocery shopping. Plus, I am super picky about the produce.

Yours is probably the safer solution, however.

I had a year-old pup I’d just adopted, and I sounded so miserable laying on the couch that she brought me her biscuit to see if that would help. ❤️

Almost everyone I know that was vaccinated got sick. Went right through the school's. It probably lessens the degree of illness. But some years then flu wins and this appears to be one of those years.

Both fought off the flu successfully over the last few weeks. She was down and out a couple days, but not severe at all. I was just tired for a few days.

She was really sick there for a few days. She even went to the doctor and both the flu and covid tests came back negative. So it must just be some other sort of virus I suppose. She's feeling better now, but is still coughing a lot.
