"I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings acct, took out a loan to move from AL to Bethesda, MD...."

Katie Sandlin
‪@kmsandlin.bsky.social‬
I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated.

Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭

It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

under Trump's first administration.

We are all going forward assuming some things will stay in place even though we know just about anything we imagine or can't imagine might turn things upside down. We continue because what else can we do?

If her dream was to work at NIH, it made sense to go for it. No president in history has done this. I knew it would be bad but didn't imagine this.

But most of the people affected were hired before the election so the point is, they really couldn't know.

She decided to become a medical scientist when Obama was president, and started her training that got the degree that got her the job in Trump's first term.

She probably applied for the job around the time Biden dropped out.

We've always had Civil Service protections before, even when I was on probation in the late 80s (Reagan/Bush I). I never expected widespread layoffs/firings like this. I have a couple of people on my team who just came off probation and I'm glad we were able to get them protected. I certainly won't trust anyone under this regime who joins the Government, and that's the sad part.

I live in a home I built 40 years ago and still love it. If they kill off SS and Medicare the housing market will deluged with homes being listed like never seen before even in the Depression when many people still didn't own a home, they rented.

The prices will TANK as a huge portion of 67 million people are trying to sell at the same time. Bankruptcy will be filed like never before too. The rich will buy them for peanuts when people have no other choice if they want to sell. I've collected SS for six years after paying in over 47 years and paying double from being self-employed all but five of those years

Trump and his butt buddies will send the economy into the second Great Depression which is exactly what they want. They want people to grovel and have their hat in their hand while begging for a job,any job.

Edited to add: NIH used an experimental drug not available in hospitals, part of a trial.

I totally agree with Katie, speaking of her coworkers at NIH “ incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.”
This is so heartbreaking and counterproductive.

I have an old friend who did the same thing, and used to have a neighbor with a child who was born with about 8 different serious conditions (not exaggerating) and NIH saw him through. Plus I use their research just for my own purposes, when I get inadequate info from doctors treating me or family members.

I don't have anything original to say. It's CRAZY. Crazier every day. Of all places to cut, this is one that makes no sense.

And it'll take even more time to fix what these assholes are breaking. Thousands will probably die each year as a result.
The survivors of these precipitous mass firings will find that thousands of man-years of talent and experience are no longer there. It will make it very hard for them to maintain a high degree of effectiveness in their agencies.
God help us if bird flu morphs into a covid-like epidemic. They're preventing us from having any chance at being ready for such an eventuality.

27. Get ready for the Muskrat Great Depression
Sat Feb 15, 2025, 12:29 PM
Feb 15

Before WWII, the 1929 crash and depression was called the Republican Great Depression.

The US government is this country's largest employer. When Muskrat gets rid of all those people making half decent salaries, when he forces them to go on unemployment and be unemployed, things are going to fall apart rapidly. What kind of impact do you think the sudden unemployment of millions of people will have on the US economy?

He will gather up all of our tax dollars that we're paying to millions of people and put it into his and pedo Trump's pockets. And that wealth will sit, and sit, and sit, and sit, and sit....this is what happened during the last Republican Great Depression and the Great Recession.

The filthy-rich took once circulating money, hoarded it and caused economies to fail. Instead of the Republican Great Depression, we will have the Muskrat Great Depression. We already named a depression after the US conservative party Musk's name on this depression would make it easier to track.

Let's start calling our failing economy that now. The Muskrat Great Depression.

Having been raised in Maryland, the LAST place I would ever consider moving was Bethesda Maryland.

Extremely high cost of living, high taxes and stifling regulation.

If Ms. Sandlin was from Alabama, she should have angled a position as a GS employee at NASA in Huntsville Alabama... Her job would have been a lot safer than anywhere near DC.

But along with that goes the tax base, stops peoples' ability to spend money, increases demand for income support.

Add in tax cuts for those who need it, and what have you got?
A moral dustbowl, a collapsing economy, depression.

Trump and Musk do their sums, but use their fingers instead of calculators and computers.

Basically, DOGE doesn't know what it is doing, and Trump is determined to take the whole country to Hell with him.

I can't see any way around or through this.

Fed Service, wanting to serve whatever the department's mission is. The people around us are all on the same page, most of the time. And it IS a good environment, usually. Not only that, but while the pay is nothing to write home about, it's mostly better than a bottom ladder out in the business world.

I'm assuming this was one of the probies that got riffed. Last in, first out. Happens everywhere. *Used* to not happen in Fed Service. But, I guess this is what they mean by "running it like a business." Always check whether or not your definition of the job and contract points is the same as that being offered by the employer. You might find yourself unpleasantly surprised.

I miss my job with the DoD, serving the National Guard and Reserves in an education capacity. But I'm damned glad now I retired a few years ago. With my mouth, I'd have been the first out the door... if not shown the way to the prison!
