DW News: Germany should consider arming itself with nuclear weapons

'Look what happened to Ukraine - they gave up their nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees that came no nothing. Now with the US pulling security guarantees from Europe, Germany should consider nuclear arms.'

We will not become another Ukraine.

Making the world much more dangerous.

And diverting badly needed funds from major world issues.
Like climate change.

AfD lost therefore Dump lost.

Germany will not develop nuclear weapons. It will forge closer ties with France and fall under the French nuclear umbrella. The EU is a fancy name for the Franco-German alliance.

The United States of Europe is a year or two away. Britain just may rejoin out of pure necessity.

Their readiness state is horrible. It’s why they underfund NATO to such a high degree. A German colleague of mine used to say that Germany had already lost the arms race so why bother with a 1st class military? Nuclear weapons is not only about possession, but about maintenance and readiness plus a strong defense. Germany does not have this.

It's not that hard. Sourcing the fissile materials is the hard part. They had a nuclear energy industry that could have helped with that, but they stupidly shut down all their reactors a couple years ago. They might still have some research reactors going.

that it would take some time to develop that program, much less any "delivery" system to actually be able to use them......

Sadly, if during Biden's four years, he had figured out a covert way to give them some, and also the stealth planes to deliver them....

Nuclear weapons require a lot of maintenance and upkeep. Two things the Germans have shown to be incapable or unwilling to do with their conventional military since the end of the Cold War. They have shortages of the most basic equipment, like radios, guns, and ammunition. They have maybe a 300-400 modern tanks, many of which aren't operational due to lack of parts. Their navy is small and their air force, as of a few years ago, had over half their pilots unable to meet Nato minimum flight hours due to their aircraft being down for repairs.
