Because Trump complimented Schumer for going along with it.
When Trump tells you that you are doing the right thing, you know you are on the wrong track.

(12,179 posts)I was sure it would change Schumer's mind. But no, it must have scared Schumer to death.
I actually think Schumer looked at it as a threat.
Spineless. Absolutely spineless.

(12,179 posts)we agree that they were all threatened in some way, either with their (and their family's) welfare or with the threat of being primaryed.
Let me know if we are on the same page.

(824 posts)The threat of violence or the threat of revelation of Kompromat has been one of the only justifications I have seen that explains how so many craven political decisions are being made, among people who we know know better. I am amazed that so many are deciding to cave to that pressure, so much so that I ultimately question the explanation. Can they all be so anti-Constitutional/democratic.

What if Schumer publicly went against the shutdown on purpose? What if he actually WANTS a Dem backlash that would "pressure" him into changing his mind -- especially if he KNEW that anti-DOGE firing court rulings were on the horizon?
Remember how Obama allegedly took Biden to task for making "gaffes" that forced him to accelerate the "evolution" of his "thinking" about gay marriage? And more recently, remember how Kamala forced Trump to oppose hot mics at their debates by coming out in favor of them?

(44,982 posts)No offense taken at all -- I just find it hard to believe that this is a merely coincidence:
If the DOGE firings have indeed been reversed, then Trump and Musk have lost a gargantuan piece of their leverage.

Here is what Grok says in case people can't read the post. The emphasis on "systemic harm" (bolding) is mine."
"As of March 14, 2025, a government shutdown likely poses a greater immediate risk to the American people due to its widespread, visible disruptions. However, passing the CR could be riskier in the long term, embedding cuts and ceding power to an administration with ambitious, untested plans like DOGE.
The choice hinges on whether one prioritizes avoiding acute pain now or mitigating systemic harm later--a dilemma Democrats face as they decide in the Senate today.
Public sentiment and historical precedent suggest a shutdown's pressure could yield a better outcome than a CR that locks in Republican priorities unchallenged."
I feel that is the key here, short term pain versus long-term systemic damage that cause much greater and longer lasting damage. Schumer is taking the easy way out and it could have unrecoverable repercussions.

(2,011 posts)I never use "Grok", I only know of it because I've read about it. I guess the point of the BlueSky poster was that even an AI tool associated with Twitter believes the CR is worse than a shutdown.
Moot point now I guess since 10 Dems already voted to pass it.

(9,827 posts)The thing the Schumer ignored is the Republican town halls which gave the Dems HUGE leverage over Republicans in getting Gov back open. Now...we have nothing because all they need is a simple majority for the Bill.
Republicans look at this as a MASSIVE amount of weakness shown by Democrats. Hell...they even gave them a bigger plum with TEN voting with Republicans when they only needed seven.

(9,365 posts)Sometimes Trump lies for a purpose, but often he appears to lie for no other reason than to "own the libs." Trump has reduced political discourse and commentary to a game of liar's pokers in which the stakes include the well-being and lives of innocent bystanders. Folks who prefer to avoid dealing with the chaos will not be immune from the consequences.
