He is a Democrat.
He is a Civil War reenacter etc. huge gun guy etc. just told me that Donald Trump is the most dangerous animal in the world and he is now a Democrat.
Of all the people I know and of all my relatives the last person I would expect to do this and say this is him, I hope that means we have hope but I dont know that it does.
He said that for the short time he was a police officer he took an oath to defend the Constitution and thats why hes now a Democrat.

Dems defend the Constitution. You see it everywhere. They defend the judiciary, the military, the traditional aspects of the DOJ, on and on. They uphold their oaths of office.
GOPers desecrate the Constitution. Led by Trump, they are NOT conservatives. They are ripping apart the Constitution. They are counter revolutionaries, not conservatives.

noun: anarchy
1.
a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority or other controlling systems.
2.
the organization of society on the basis of voluntary cooperation, without political institutions or hierarchical government; anarchism.

(1,492 posts)The MAGA Republicans are not conservatives. They are destroyers and counter revolutionaries, as you say. And anti-democratic authoritarians. Anyone that really loves America and democracy should oppose them. I am glad that this guy's relative became a Democrat. We need to welcome and encourage all Trump defectors if we are to dislodge Trump and his gang of criminals from power. If we can get 5 percent or 10 percent of them, we should have a strong majority.
Falcon101
(75 posts)The MAGA people throw around the term "conservative" without having any idea of conservative principles. They certainly have not read any of the writing of past conservative thinkers. That is why current conservative writers (e.g. George Will) do no support today's GOP. That is why true conservatives (e.g. Romney, Cheney, etc) are no longer in office. The Dems are closer to conservative writings and beliefs (in both foreign and domestic policy) than the GOP.

(7,529 posts)once we get rid of trump and his administrative minions... including Musk and all trump's kids. Plain old repubs have sold out their party and they did so a long time ago... long before Reagan was in office, but it really kicked into high gear then. We've got a whole new generation of repubs coming of age in Congress who know no other way of being a "conservative" except for this current republican era. That's a hard mindset to shake and change. I hope with the repubs who ARE changing their mind about trump, that they see the rot goes all the way to the core and out to the farthest edges of conservatism. It'll be another couple of generations before the ship of state gets righted the correct way, and back on course with people guiding it who are true believers in the constitution.

I did not know pay for a book signing was a thing. Do people really have the money to piss away like that? Usually people have limited time to read books so of all the choices in reading materials, one would read a book by Schumer?

It has been difficult sometimes around him when he tries to defend conservatives, and there have been moments when my husband wanted to disown him. (52,461 posts)are the millions of people who have blindly supported him without question. Their deep-seated hatred of Democrats and liberals seems to surpass any misgivings they might have about Trump or his policies. Without the willful ignorance of the masses, there would be no President Trump. He is a symptom of a much bigger problem.
That said, I'm so glad that your nephew has seen the light.
I am hopeful that there are many, many more, though I'm inclined to believe that some of them aren't going to be quick to admit they were wrong.

(7,529 posts)This "deep-seated hatred of Democrats and liberals" comes from decades of brainwashing... and not just in the usual manner. Repugs had to take actual words and slant/change their meanings to dig it in deeper into these brains. Take "Entitlement" for example. And entitlement is something to which you are guaranteed as a quality of service or of money paid in. But the repugs took it during the time of the "welfare queen" back in Reagan's day and started turning it around to were the meaning inferred "being entitled to something you DIDN'T earn". They should be jailed just for what they did (and are doing) to the English language! They say a picture is worth a thousand words... but those thousand words repeated over and over and over again, especially in the media, have more impact on maga's brains than a mere picture.
PatSeg
(52,461 posts)Then Roger Ailes created Fox News and brought propaganda to an entirely new level. These clueless Trump supporters have been listening to Fox News and right-wing radio for many years and the brainwashing is pretty thorough.
I agree. The way republicans use language is disgraceful and the deceit is definitely intentional. Then it is reinforced by Fox News and other right-wing outlets.

(9,419 posts)They took the word "entitlement" and used it against itself.
From Dictionary.com:
entitlement
[ en-tahy-tl-muhnt ]
noun
1. the act of giving, or the state of having, a title, right, or claim to something:
She supported legislation to improve the lot of the elderly, including the entitlement of senior citizens to vote by absentee ballot.
2. a provision, amount, etc., to which one is entitled; a right:
A good education is the moral entitlement of every child.
Temporary teachers receive most of the entitlements of permanent teachers, including annual salary, on a prorated basis.
3. a government program, such as Social Security or unemployment insurance, that provides a benefit to eligible participants, or the benefit provided by such a program:
Eligibility for this insurance program will be affected if there is also a Medicare entitlement.
4. the unjustified assumption that one has a right to certain advantages, preferential treatment, etc.:
"Their sense of entitlementI don't want to call it arrogancemakes dealing with some people difficult,'' said the senator.
All of the definitions above are correct. Republicans knew the fourth of those listed had a negative connotation and were more than happy to build an automatic association with that specific meaning into the public consciousness. Dishonest, but effective.

Make sure that they stay engaged, and recognize that the best hope for turning this ship around is by mobilizing the Democratic party, that while many of them may disappoint us, there are many who are fighting as hard as we are, and there can be more if we encourage those who will fight, and replace those who won't.

(40,778 posts)I have a relative I've always been fond of &I think he would consider himself an old time conservative. He was the first to bring up politics & we've exchanged a couple of emails where he said liberals are too emotional & are overreacting to "the 2025 project." Honestly, I don't think he'd heard of it until I asked him. Fast forward to after the election, for the first year in many, I didn't send him a birthday greeting I'm just so angry with anyone who voted for the orange POS. My relative wasn't a full on trumper like some others in my family, but he's a die hard repub & now I'm not sure you can really distinguish old time republicans from the cult anymore.
