The American Tourist Industry Is About To Fall Off A Cliff -- Digby

https://digbysblog.net/2025/03/16/the-american-tourist-industry-is-about-to-fall-off-a-cliff/

For good reason

I actually think it’s going to be worse than what the analysts are predicting. Trump won’t shut his trap and now they’re detaining foreigners at airports who haven’t done anything wrong. It’s dangerous here.

The Washington Post reports:

International travelers concerned about President Donald Trump’s trade policies and bellicose rhetoric have been canceling trips to the United States, depriving the U.S. tourism industry of billions of dollars at a time when the economy has started to appear wobbly.

Canadians are skipping trips to Disney World and music festivals. Europeans are eschewing U.S. national parks, and Chinese travelers are vacationing in Australia instead.

International travel to the United States is expected to slide by 5 percent this year, contributing to a $64 billion shortfall for the travel industry, according to Tourism Economics. The research firm had originallyforecast a 9 percent increase in foreign travel, but revised its estimate late last monthto reflect “polarizing Trump Administration policies and rhetoric.”

“There’s been a dramatic shift in our outlook,” said Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics. “You’re looking at a much weaker economic engine than what otherwise would’ve been, not just because of tariffs, but the rhetoric and condescending tone around it.”

It’s pretty clear that Trump and his cronies and henchmen are hostile to all foreigners and they are not welcome here unless they are Russian oligarchs or white South Africans (and no I’m not just talking about Elon Musk.). That’s it. I can’t blame anyone else for staying away. Why take the chance?

Sun Mar 16, 2025, 07:25 PM
Mar 2025

But that was before Trump's EO's and, as Digby so accurately put it, "Trump won't shut his trap".

The U.S. Travel Winter 2025 Forecast projects travel expenditure in the U.S. will continue to grow at normalized rates, driven by resilient consumer spending, sustained business investment and major events promoting international visits.

The forecast data is driven by Tourism Economics' travel forecasting model.

Looking ahead: For 2025, total U.S. Travel spending is projected to grow 3.9% to $1.35 trillion, with additional growth to $1.46 trillion (inflation-adjusted) by 2028.

Deeper Insights:

— A mega-decade of events could drive record visitation to the U.S. The FIFA 2026 World Cup, America’s 250th Anniversary, the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cups in 2031 and 2033 and the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City have the potential to bring more visits than ever. U.S. Travel forecasts 8.8% growth for inbound international visits in 2025 and 8.9% growth in 2026.

— Growth in international visits to the United States remains an important factor in re-establishing travel as one of our most important exports, with more than $200 billion in international spending projected for 2025.

I can't see regular people from other countries wanting to visit the US.

Most of our National Parks will be understaffed and possibly being converted to oil fields.

Walking in some of our iconic cities will come with the dangers of being whisked into a black van without reason.

Of course, if you are a wealthy billionaire from a country such as Saudi Arabia, you don't have to worry.

39. The oil companies may not bother with drilling at all
Mon Mar 17, 2025, 01:53 AM
Mar 2025

For one thing, we have tons of oil already and there is plenty of domestic production. Also, it costs a LOT to prospect for and complete a new wellsite and when we have plenty, there will not be enough profit to bother. In addition, there are already many leases acquired by Big Oil which have not been touched and may never be.

There are a lot of production sites which had slowed down and were producing a much smaller amount of oil. Many of these are being reworked using the horizontal drilling techniques which allow the rig to hit the secondary pool. These could not have been tapped previously because there has to be a certain amount of distance between rigs.

Actually, I am more worried about the woods/forests in the National Forests and on National Park Lands. That to me is likely to occur much sooner than oil. Some of the last original forests are on those properties.

I have told him that if he does win the Nobel Prize, and I'm still alive, I get to go to the awards ceremony. For Canadians Visiting Myrtle Beach, Trump Policies Make the Vibe Chillier
Canadians have long flocked to the South Carolina beach town. This year, many are offended by the president and threatening to stay away.

Patricia Cape, 80, a retired pharmacy worker from Hamilton, Ontario, said her children had been trying to persuade her and her husband, Gary, to cut their vacation short for patriotic reasons. She was giving it some thought. “I am very disappointed by President Trump,” she said. “Why would he want to alienate Canada? I love the United States.

Arthur and Kathy Jadischke, of Mississauga, Ontario, had already changed their plans and were heading home early. Mr. Jadischke, 82, said he did not know if he would return to Myrtle Beach. He compared Mr. Trump with Hitler and Vladimir Putin. “If this stuff keeps happening, I can’t see myself coming,” he said. “Because I’d be ashamed.”

Wayne Gray, a Myrtle Beach native and former city councilman, said that Can-Am Days were more crucial for the local economy a few decades ago, when the influx of Canadians between January and April gave a boost to local businesses before the big crush of American visitors between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The bellweather will be advance bookings. Trips already paid for may well happen. I suspect (almost hope) is that new bookings decline drastically. Tourism is a major industry all along the Canadian/US border. All that's in jeopardy now.
When you look along the length of the border, you're looking at a multi-billion dollar industry that may just crash this summer.
Not to mention the fact that Canadian tourists travel all the way down to the Gulf Coast in winter time.

The collapse of the tourist industry is just one aspect of the incredible shit storm the Trump administration is inflicting on both countries.
But what do Trump and Musk care? They're going to get all the money and power they could ever want.

It's a long flight from the west coast. But taking a cruise is even longer (and more expensive.)

Enjoy your tourist-free life there, Cha!

(One of my ex's used to be a mucky-muck with American Hawaiian Cruises so I had a chance to spend some good time there. Unfortunately my northern European skin is now paying me back....)

were packed today. People were bagging rays, lots of impromptu singing in the Montmarte Square. Pepple drinking at outdoor tables. Spring and summer will be huge money makers in France.

72. No wonder potential visitors feel pushed (or alienated) away. I'd feel like that, too.

I'm NOT a tourist from another country, but I feel this shame rather intensely. If this is allowed to continue and we DON'T fight it and fight it HARD, it'll be no one's fault but ours if the economy suffers noticeably, and things start falling apart.
This:
“You’re looking at a much weaker economic engine than what otherwise would’ve been, not just because of tariffs, but the rhetoric and condescending tone around it.”

The BAD GUYS (ie: trump and friends) are hellbent on tearing it all down. WE have to do everything we can think of to make sure they can't.
