Wil Wheaton perfectly described Musk.

A great day to revisit Wil Wheaton's excellent takedown of Elon Musk from 2022;

I can not fathom the emptiness, the insecurity, the insatiable need for attention and validation, the staggering arrogance, the malevolence and total void of human experience that is Elon Musk.

He's the richest man on the planet. You can't go anywhere or do anything without interacting with something he's part of in some way. There are literal millions of people who uncritically worship him, in spite of overwhelming evidence that he's a douchebag. Some number of them will come after me, as they come after anyone who points at their naked emperor.

They'll spend entire days going after me and people like me, slavishly serving a man who does not even know they exist. They are his army of fools, uncritically serving his every whim. And it still isn't enough.

He can have any material thing he wants, and he will never be happy or satisfied.
He has no real friends. Every single person around him is either a viper, a parasite, or both.

So what does he do? He bullies and threatens and harasses and trolls and behaves like the weak, scared, insecure child he has always been. That's a tragedy for him, but it's dangerous for us. He doesn't care what he destroys or who he hurts as he chases this existential thing he can not ever have.

You know the saying "hurt people hurt people"? He's a hurt person who is hurting our society, making people I care about less safe. The consequences of this one man's midlife crisis are global, and that terrifies me.

Wil Wheaton. I remember seeing him on a few episodes of Big Bang Theory. Recently they showed an episode of bbt and there was musk on an episode. I turned it off immediately.

I never would have guessed it when he first showed up on Star Trek.

Aside from the TV and Podcasting et al, he is also one of my favorite audiobook performer. I enjoy a good snarky science fiction and he has the best voice for it (something like a John Scalzi)

I've seen this discussed several times around the web. Wheaton had a TV show I used to watch, and he's done some characters (like on Eureka) that I really enjoyed watching. I don't blame him for being Wesley, he did a good job with the material he was given.

If you are looking for well known ones, he narrates the novel versions of 'The Martian' and 'Ready Player One' both of which were made into major movies.

But where I learned to love him was on John Scazi books. If you are unfamiliar with him, he writes a blend of science fiction and alternate near history that has a strong snarky tone. Both in the embodiment of wisecracking characters and as a nod to inside jokes with the reader. He is one of my favorite authors and his style pairs perfectly with Wheaton.

As an example, 'Redshirts' is the story of a Star Trek like mission where the crew starts to realize they are alien bait.

Or 'Agent to the Stars' where an invading alien race just needs a good PR firm

My favorite is probably 'Lock-in' where a disease leaves a segment of the population dependent on remote controlled robotic bodies

enjoy

His mother and father forced him into it and made him do it even when he tried to stop. The fact that he came out of this without turning into a drugged out has-been is nothing short of a miracle. He has remade himself on his own terms and is all the better for it.

Good for him. I am glad things went his way after all of that. I have great respect for him.

Having said that, there is a part of me that will always hate him because he had a career as an actor that I did not even get the chance to try for, and yet he did not want to do it. That is like a slap in the face to someone like me, who struggled for decades to even get my foot in the door.

Regardless, he deserves any and all happiness he gets. He was put through the wringer and should have some success.

“JOE HELLER

True story, Word of Honor:
Joseph Heller, an important and funny writer
now dead,
and I were at a party given by a billionaire
on Shelter Island.

I said, “Joe, how does it make you feel
to know that our host only yesterday
may have made more money
than your novel ‘Catch-22’
has earned in its entire history?”
And Joe said, “I’ve got something he can never have.”
And I said, “What on earth could that be, Joe?”
And Joe said, “The knowledge that I’ve got enough.”
Not bad! Rest in peace!”
