Today, AOC and I had 34,000 people come out in Denver.
It is the largest rally that I have ever had.
And it tells me that the American people will not allow Trump to move us into oligarchy and authoritarianism.
We will fight back. We will win.

(337 posts)I'm hoping that Comrade Krasnov does not declare Marshall Law. This tour is drawing big crowds. Bigger crowds than Krasnov was drawing. Krasnov will be jealous of the crowd size and mad about the way they talk about him. This could turn dangerous.

No way he's going to do a town hall anywhere near his constituents.
He is the wrong man for the job right now.

(6,670 posts)* and that Democrats are corrupt. It's untrue and it's not helping. This type of talk only depresses turnout for Democrats and makes people believe that "Independent" or third-parties are the only hope for our country. The obvious outcome of this type of thinking and false narrative is that the liberal/progressive vote is SPLIT and this always benefits the GOP. Why would anyone do or say things that harm the Democratic party, that suppress the vote for Democrats, which in turn ends up helping the GOP? His message needs to be focused SOLELY and EXCLUSIVELY against the GOP and against Trump.

(6,670 posts)Without them, it would have been even worse. Count your blessings. Also, two unpopular (but elected) politicians do not define the entire Democratic party. Why would anyone say or do things that suppress the vote for Democrats?
>> Citizens United ruins both parties if we let it.
Yes. Then fight that rather than demanding that the Democratic party cede the advantage to the GOP by willingly playing on an unlevel field... all for the sake of virtue signaling. Our party should use every legal means we have to compete with the GOP. Refusing to do so in order to give a purity performance (while intentionally putting our party at a disadvantage) makes no sense.

(3,986 posts)Fortunate to have politicians who say one thing to their voters and then vote according to their top donors?
There is an absence here of the fundamentals of a functioning democracy.
I am sure you mean well, but we are too far apart in appreciating the gravity of Citizens United.
Enjoy the remainder of your day.

(6,670 posts)Undoubtedly, the Citizens United decision stands as a pivotal moment that unleashed significant challenges. Despite our party's firm stance against this ruling and the complexities it introduces, we find ourselves operating within this established framework. While we may strongly oppose the decision and its ramifications, it is impractical for the Democratic party to adopt an overly righteous stance and decline donations that are essential for maintaining parity with the GOP.
People like myself who live in the real world know that in the present landscape, it is crucial for our party to remain competitive and ensure a level playing field. Refusing strategic donations that could help balance the scales would only serve to relinquish a critical advantage to our political rivals, without yielding any meaningful gains or advantages. In navigating the current political environment, achieving a sense of equilibrium becomes paramount for effective participation and influence.
This does not make Democrats "corrupt". This is a necessary reality. To do otherwise is to simply virtue signaling and raising a white flag of surrender.

(6,670 posts)This has been a oft-repeated mantra about Democrats, I'm surprised that there's anyone around who hasn't already heard any of the many dozen different versions of it. Some subtle, others less-so... it runs the gamut.

And you know, I think people are looking for alternatives. And I think, among other things, they also want to end this corrupt campaign finance system which allows billionaires in both parties to buy elections, he said.

(6,166 posts)Sanders is pointing out painful truths. PAINFUL. It's great to remember he's fighting a good fight with Democratic party allies and seems to be honestly working to help the Democratic party become better and more successful.

(6,670 posts)Anyone who is serious about trying to improve and strengthen the Democratic party does so from within. Shitting on the party by equating Democrats to the GOP only suppresses support for our party and that benefits the GOP. Why would anyone do that? Encouraging others to run for elected office as Independents "outside the Democratic party" (as he's said) only serves to divide the progressive/liberal votes... this weakens the Democratic party, and benefits the GOP. Again, why? This does NOT "help the Democratic party to become better and more successful" (to use your words).

(6,166 posts)Democratic leadership needs to accept the truths about its fundamental weaknesses and failures before it can even begin to build a stronger party.
Oopsie Daisy
(6,670 posts)* lying about Democrats by calling them corrupt, spineless, cowards, complicit, and no different than GOP is not, by any stretch of the imagination a "road map to success," nor does it build a stronger party. I live in the real world, where those things only kneecap the party and sabotage our efforts. It's suppresses the vote. It splits the vote. All of these things benefit the GOP and Trump.
Mysterian
(6,166 posts)Funny that Sanders would choose to caucus with (what you claim) he called corrupt, spineless cowards. The reason Trump is president is because of apathy. 90 million Americans eligible to vote did not vote. Look at what is happening right now. Sanders and a Democrat are stumping around the country to get voters excited. Do you think they are telling people to vote for independents or republicans? In the real world, the Democratic party is failing and must go directly to the people, like AOC and Sanders are doing, bypassing the corrupt corporate media. If you don't see that, we live in different worlds.
Oopsie Daisy
(6,670 posts)* that their vote doesn't matter, or that "sending a message" and "punishing Democrats" is more important than winning. There's a scorched earth policy among many who call themselves "critics" or who push the narrative that they "want to help" the Democrats.
>> Do you think they are telling people to vote for independents or republicans?
His negativity toward Democrats will NOT get voters "excited about" Democrats. Even without using your explicit wording, the meaning is clear and the apathy spreads. The recent comment about encouraging people to run as Independents OUTSIDE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY literally is encouraging THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE to oppose Democrats and split the vote. It could not be more clear what's going on here.
>> Funny that Sanders would choose to caucus with (what you claim) he called corrupt, spineless cowards.
If he were serious about wanting to strengthen the Democratic party, then he should join the party and stay in the party. If he can't declare himself to be a proud Democrat, then his "support" of Democrats rings hollow and insincere.
As I've said before it's easy to criticize and run through a laundry list of complaints at campaign stops. It's much harder to make the commitment to get one's hands dirty and actually do something about it. As you say... If you don't see that, we live in different worlds.

(1,376 posts)Unfortunately it has taken a decade to acknowledge it. MSM is even recognizing that the only way to combat the far right, is to have a far left. It is extremely unfortunate that we had to let this get out of hand. 3.5 more years to get our shit together and take democracy back.
My question is what's next? Talk is cheap. Actions speak in volumes.

(1,874 posts)They have all the energy right now. I love AOC. I am not willing to have my vote taken away, either, because some are trying to decide for me that my only choices in 2028 should be straight white protestant men. I like AOC. I like Mayor Pete. I like Elizabeth Warren. I want to see fighters, not right wing apologists simpering on a podcast and thinking because they have pretty hair and happen to be a white male, they've got it in the bag.
