March 21, 2025
One primetime host on Fox News recently uttered a remark about public education and disabled students that visibly shocked one of his co-panelists.
On Thursday, Rolling Stone reporter Nikki McCann Ramirez posted a video clip to Bluesky of a segment from Fox News' "The Five." In the segment, liberal panelist Jessica Tarlov was commenting on President Donald Trump's executive order aimed at shuttering the Department of Education, and her fears that it would negatively impact the quality of education that disabled children receive.
"When I hear Republicans out there talking about their plan for education in America, I don't hear them talking about making sure disabled kids have access to a public education," Tarlov said. "I don't hear them talking about empowering
"Because we're against it," Gutfeld said matter-of-factly.

(64,225 posts)Here's why empathy can be a courageous act:
Vulnerability:
Empathy often requires us to be vulnerable and open to the possibility of learning and understanding perspectives that differ from our own.
Stepping Outside of One's Own Perspective:
It takes courage to put aside our own biases, assumptions, and experiences to truly understand someone else's point of view.
Facing Discomfort:
Empathizing with someone who is struggling or experiencing hardship can be emotionally taxing, requiring courage to face the discomfort and pain they are experiencing.
Potential for Conflict:
Empathy can sometimes lead to challenging conversations or situations, requiring courage to stand up for someone else's needs or perspective, even if it means facing disagreement or conflict.
Acting on Empathy:
Empathy is not just about understanding; it also involves acting on that understanding, which can require courage to take action and support others.
Brené Brown's perspective:
Brené Brown, a researcher and author, emphasizes that we can only create genuine empathic connections if we are brave enough to really get in touch with our own fragilities.

Donald Trump Ordered Illegal Removal of Braille Because 'No Blind People are Going to Live in Trump Tower': Report
https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-braille-blind-people-1118601
The alleged interaction was recounted by Barbara Res, who led construction at the Trump Organization, in an opinion piece in the New York Daily News on Wednesday.
"What's this?" Trump, noticing the small raised dots, reportedly asked the architect who went to his office to show what the residential elevator interiors would look like.
"Braille," the architect responded.
Trump apparently demanded that the architect take the feature out.
"We can't," the architect replied. "It's the law."
"Get rid of the [expletive] braille. No blind people are going to live in Trump Tower," Trump shouted, according to Res. "Just do it."

(27,052 posts)schools as a pejorative term for "public education." I get why the wealthy elite want to monopolize quality education for their children, but I don't get why lower economic red state people are against affordable eduction for all. Perhaps it is a lingering racism dating back to segregated schools.

(7,438 posts)Or any chattel owning society. It's normally against the law to teach people to read, write, or do math... let alone history and other higher topics. If people are educated in these subjects they can learn on their own what's going on. They can think critically and then rebel against their station in life. For the rich and powerful its important to keep the status quo. It's easier to control the people if they're uneducated. I won't say what I'm thinking about these people right now.

we have a national interest in having the best educated population in the world.
50 years ago, most of the innovations were coming from the USA: transistors, space exploration, pharmaceuticals, telephony, computers and everything else, and much of that emerged from research at great universities. Today the most important thing in 90% of the universities is recruiting (with millions of dollars of NIL money) the next great point guard or quarterback, many of whom have no intention of ever getting a college education or degree. In the past, philanthropy from alumni funded libraries or research centers. Today, much of that money goes into the NIL pool, and the university makes up the difference by charging runaway tuition rates.
The center of technology today is not Silicon valley or Austin. It is in Asia. Just about all the new energy products come from China or S. Korea. Hard drives come from Indonesia and elsewhere.
When you look at education levels ranked by state, the ten most educated states are al blue states
https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/most-educated-states
But the Republicans want to eliminate education. Their goal, evidently, is for everybody to be like Oklahoma or Mississippi. I really don't care what OK or MS do to themselves, but the idea of eliminating education will just add momentum to our race to the bottom as a nation.

(19,297 posts)homes. Education was bringing in scholars from Europe to teach their children and the universities were for those children. Only the top. Business was handed down to their children (what we now call nepo-babies) because they believed that knowledge and wisdom and business sense was genetic. They still do.
I remember Joe Ford the CEO of Alltel telling all of us that he had looked over the world trying to find his successor and only 1 person was qualified. His son Scott.
They are going to have a major problem replacing the American work force. Remember when the railroads imported the Chinese laborers because they did not want to pay Americans to lay the track. Even earlier they did not want to pay immigrants to work the farms in British Colonial America so they brought in the Africans and Caribbean slaves.
I think they really want something that is not possible in this day and age.

(2,288 posts)Those old businesses are not very relevant anymore. The e industries of the 21st Century are largely very technical, requiring many workers who are well educated.
The billionaires are still operating under the presumption that the USA is the richest country and that we can dominate economically simply by owning properties and pushing paper. The world is not that way anymore. The center of economic gravity is migrating from the US to Asia and the Middle East.
Choosing to close our Department of Education, leaving "education" largely to the religios fanatics and cultists us a death sentence for our country.
But the billionaires just don't care. They can go anywhere. They don't care what happens to the USA.

(12,164 posts)This all goes along with Donald Trump's attitude about anything lesser than the billionaire class. Fuck public education. Fuck Medicaid, SNAP and all that. Fuck Trump's great nephew. Fuck the disabled. Fuck those mothers and kids in Sudan who need the AIDS meds. Fuck Medicare (the poor) & Social Security (the elderly). Fuck 'em all. In other words, fuck the 99%.
The entire Republican Party needs to be impeached along with their dear leaders in the Administration & in the courts. Impeach them all. But that won't happen unless Republicans with a brain don't wake up to the facts I mentioned above and do something to save themselves and everyone else in the 99%, which they are a member of. Democrats cannot do it alone.
