JOE HELLER
True story, Word of Honor:
Joseph Heller, an important and funny writer
now dead,
and I were at a party given by a billionaire
on Shelter Island.
I said, Joe, how does it make you feel
to know that our host only yesterday
may have made more money
than your novel Catch-22
has earned in its entire history?
And Joe said, Ive got something he can never have.
And I said, What on earth could that be, Joe?
And Joe said, The knowledge that Ive got enough.
Not bad! Rest in peace!

(3,400 posts)... is reported to have once said, "All I want is my share, and that's all of it!"
And Daniel Day Lewis' character in "There Will Be Blood" said, "It's not enough that I have money, I cannot abide others having any." Or words to that effect. Pretty well sums up the diseased belief system of the people behind Project 2025.

(3,400 posts)... and I know he's ruined people over perceived slights, or just because he considers ripping vendors off to be "good business". But, being the craven coward he is, he always punches down. I cannot recall an instance when he tangled with someone with more money and power. He's a blowhard who cannot always back up his threats. But now that he can use the U.S. Treasury as his personal piggy bank, that changes the dynamic.

In the scene I remember, Bacall asks Edward G what he wants. Bogie pipes up and says "I'll tell you what he wants -- he wants MORE."
Edward G responds "Yeah, that's right -- I want MORE!!!

(3,400 posts)... I will never forget the very first line of that fantastic novel: "It was love at first sight." Yossarian was an unforgettable character. So was Kurt's Billy Pilgrim.
I loved both of those novelists.
