Heard this on NPR this morning. It's terrifyiing.

"There's a growing movement, among some conservatives, pushing back against traditional notions of empathy. What's behind it, and what might it mean, especially for Christian conservatives?"

Before Christ, civilizations organized along lines of power: Strong was Good. Weak was Evil.
Christianity upended the natural order: Peace (Weak) became Good. Strong (War) became Evil.

(96,317 posts)unvirtuous. Undesirable traits that are also associated with crime and sin.
Poor people must be bad people gives rise to poor people must be sinners or thugs.
If that's true, then not being poor means all things good. All things virtuous. All things "godly".
Poor people are beyond redemption. They are poor because they are bad people who don't want to work or save or be good.
Why should you feel for people like that?
Why should they get "your" money?
Why should your taxes go to people like that?
Why should you even feel for sorry for them?
Why should you concern yourself with them?
(Conservatives have said that free school lunches only encourage the poor to be poor (same with any aid) - can't pay, children can't eat. Blame your parents for being poor/bad/lazy/criminals, not the school, not the community, not the "good" people. We gave them a cheese sandwich! Pay your lunch bill poor people! Or we will shame your children.)
Prosperity Gospel.
God wants you to be rich.
If God wants you to be rich, then he wants the poor to be poor because they are not Godly people.
There's also Ayn Rand and her philosophy that conservatives and libertarians embraced all mingled throughout.
Empathy as an evil is not a new concept even if not said so directly before.

(1,084 posts)Many go to church for political reasons.
Not party politics but office politics.
I worked at a hospital.
A good portion of the people in my department went to the local 1st Baptist Church.
But during the work week, some of them bullied others and acted in the most non-Christlike behavior.

(8,723 posts)We can't survive as individuals, or even in family groups. Tribes can survive, but it requires a degree of empathy just to reach that point.
Without empathy, there's nothing to hold us together; humanity would never rise above small groups of hunter/gatherers.
It's evident that a lack of empathy has resulted in the whole of human history being just one big war for dominance.
Empathy is simply a way that love is expressed. A loveless society is doomed to fail; to tear itself apart in endless conflict, and I see less and less love in the interactions between people around the world every day.
It's not hard to see where we're headed as a species, and it doesn't look good.

In words consistent with what I have read of, and about, Gustav Gilbert, he is portrayed in the 2000 TV film Nuremberg, as telling the Head Prosecutor Robert Jackson (Alec Baldwin), I told you once that I was searching for the nature of evil. I think Ive come close to defining it: a lack of empathy. Its the one characteristic that connects all the defendants: a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow man. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.
Absence of empathy is likewise, I submit, the one characteristic that connects most of the immoral and misbegotten tenets of right-wing Replublicanism: that dogmatic mix of market fundamentalism, libertarianism, corporatism and simple greed that falsely describes itself as conservatism, and which I choose to call regressivism. Absence of empathy is the essence of evil which, if unchecked and unreversed, is certain to bring about the demise of the American republic as we know it, just as it led to the advent of the Third Reich.

I think the most important thing when dealing with empathy is to make sure you're doing the dance right. The empathy dance isn't The Hustle. It's not easy, something you can do with a bunch of people when you're drunk, and kind of dumb. If you find empathy easy, are proud you have a lot of it, and hate the evil people who don't have it, you're probably not doing the empathy dance right.
