The screen shot that Jeffrey Goldberg took showed a time stamp, that means that after a period of time the messages self-delete.
1. This is a violation of the Federal Records keeping Act.
2. This means that they plan to do shit that is illegal on Signal and if they are subpoenaed for documents they won't have them because they self-deleted.
At the Senate hearing it was Hegseth, I believe, who said that it is not illegal to use Signal if it is backed up on a government device. A Democrat should have asked Hegseth to see the saved document, can still ask, should still ask, to see it, because they do not have it.
They have been using Signal for at least a month and plan to keep using it. Dems can't let this get swept under the carpet.
We would have never known about this had they not inadvertently copied Jeffrey Goldberg, we will never know if they continue using Signal.

(13,524 posts)the 'topic' brought forth was the use of Signal - how it potentially breaks federal law - and how this aspect of the clown show should be both exposed and thoroughly investigated.

(53 posts)No way is it safe enough for the purpose of such sensitive communications. You have exactly defined why.
Backups--ha ha...oh yeah "oops, something happened to them"... right, where are the backups?!
Jeffrey's Revelation = feels like leprechauns, angels, Jedi, astrologers. kami, or whatever you believe in that is Out There (and maybe cares) brought us a rare gift! Feels like deus ex machina, divine intervention...

Deus ex machina," meaning "god from a machine" in Latin.
The term originates from ancient Greek and Roman drama, where a god would be lowered onto the stage by a crane (the machine) to resolve the plot, often at the end of a play. Today, "deus ex machina" is used to describe any situation in fiction or drama where an improbable event or character suddenly appears to solve a problem that seemed impossible to resolve through the story's own logic.
Examples: A character falling off a cliff and being caught by a flying robot that appears out of nowhere. A character suddenly remembering a forgotten clue that solves the mystery. A character getting rescued by an unlikely savior at the last minute.

The Black Swan Theory, popularized by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, describes rare, unpredictable events with a major impact that are often rationalized in hindsight, highlighting the limits of our knowledge and the power of unexpected outcomes.

(27,300 posts)Apparently they have been using it for at least a month now.
But Hillary's emails.
Make Hegseth show the conversation on a government device, because I guarantee they did not back up those conversations, that is why they were so flippant.
Democrats need to ask better questions, this is not about ineptitude, this is their thought-out plan.

(27,300 posts)you can find it here, it was about 30 minutes.
Nance said that Democrats were not asking the right questions at the hearings. He said that Democrats should have gotten advice from experts in cyber security and then ask the questions.
Hegseth said that it is legal to use Signal if the conversation in backed up on a government device. I kept waiting for Democrats to demand that Hegseth show them the Houthi raid conversations on the government device. They never asked that.

(1,800 posts)It happens a lot with Trump. He'll issue some "Exec Order" that does something outrageous and stupid. The media will report that Trump has "ordered" something outrageous and stupid to happen - without pointing out that he has no legal authority to order such a thing. Exec orders are not the law of the land. Yet people then believe that he has the authority to order pretty much anything. If that were the case why didn't every president constantly make sweeping exec orders? Because they knew exec orders are rally pretty limited in scope.

(11,707 posts)Not much of a plan using a well established communication system to discuss classified battle plans.
They should have just used Twitter or Facebook. No one would have seen it if they delete it after they talk. Right?.......Zuckerberg and Musk would have helped .

(27,300 posts)do not give a rat's ass if our military missions become compromised and troops are killed.
They want to be able to act with impunity, want to be able to act lawlessly, and not be held accountable.
Why do you think they spoke so flippantly, using emojis for fuck's sake. They spoke this way because they believed that their conversations were going to be self-deleted, and they were.
What are Democrats going to do to stop them? They should begin by asking to see the conversations that Hegseth insinuated were backed up on a government device. I guarantee that they did not back up those Houthi raid conversations on a government device.
We would be none the wiser had they not included Jeffrey Goldberg in the conversation, and we are going to be none the wiser if they keep using Signal in the future.
This needs to be front page news until it is resolved. The whole lot of them should be removed from office and prosecuted, but we know that will never happen.

(15,717 posts)Democrats need to be on every media outlet that there is demanding that this be made known. They need to learn to do like the Republicans do. If they are asked a question about ANY topic, they need to immediately use the air time to switch to this topic and hammer it, hammer it, HAMMER IT!!!!

(11,707 posts)They are criminals, pedophiles, abusers, cons, Nazis, traitors and psychopaths. They are just doing what comes naturally. Which is f*cking as many people as possible, who don't want to be f*cked, making as many people suffer as our broken justice system will allow and laughing at all the idiots who think otherwise.

(53,678 posts)1) The information is unclassified as testified by Gabbard.
2) It keeps Hogsbreath in the news.
Keep digging, suing in court on the basis that either they are complying with both acts or not. If they "comply" with the FOIA act and say there is no record, appeal because Hegseth's word is the official word of the government on the issue. Make them admit they are breaking the Records Act by conspiring to go around it.

(156 posts)I’ve wondered whether Congress can subpoena or request FOIA records for a count of the times their SCIFs have been utilized. If 0, we have our answer re how they are conducting all manner of business.
It was Trump who took a call of a bombing in Africa from 1st term at his table at Mar a Lago in the middle of a party.
I have read, but couldn’t find the links on Heritage site, that they actually recommend Signal for the very reason to avoid the records act.

It's all by design.
This tells me that they know they're breaking the law to cover up breaking the law with no evidence.
I'll bet DOG-E intra-communications is over Signal.

(28,517 posts)Me blathering over gaming stuff with my daughter is hardly National Security material.
It is superior to RCS/SMS, doesn't capture Metadata like WhatsApp (middle finger to META). Dont even get me started on the mess people have on Apple.
But yeah, sadly we all need to take measures for secure and encrypted communications now. Signal, Telegram and Threema for messaging/calls. VPN's and Orbot/Tor Network to secure and encrypt your net fingerprint.

The whole world knows what happened here, so it should be obvious that every country in the world will now be monitoring things for the foreseeable future to see if they use it again. If they do, those countries will be in position to intercept the communications and do God knows what with it.
